Jefferson quote
There is a quote from Jefferson where he said that there had been no example of a free government co-existing with priests. All well and good, but there were virtually no free governments, except for England and Switzerland, until the US came along! Seems kind of a silly observation IMO. I think what he meant was a government attempting to be secular would not be permitted to be just that if the clergy were powerful. There had been a lot of unelected thug governments up until that time and yes, the Catholic/Christian clergy attempted to counterbalance them with good reason, I think. The only counterweight around!
