Name confusion
[edit]I've suggested moving this page, after doing a cleanup to focus this page on the earlier society. Before my cleanup, there was overlap and confusion between the two societies. I did initially wonder if they could both be covered in the same article, but the one started in 1939 appears to be a separate entity, and the current body, Anti-Slavery International, gives its foundation date as 1939. (Both articles need more work and citations, but I wanted to get the history and naming accurate as it was affecting work I have been doing on other articles.) I'll add a bit more when I have time. Requested move 3 December 2020
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: Moved to Anti-Slavery Society (1823–1838) (non-admin closure) BegbertBiggs (talk) 20:05, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
Anti-Slavery Society → Society for the Mitigation and Gradual Abolition of Slavery Throughout the British Dominions – Confusion between two organisations commonly referred to as the Anti-Slavery Society, with many articles linking to this article when they should be linking to the later society (post-1839 - now Anti-Slavery International). The links in the other articles would have to checked and manually re-linked to the correct organisation after the move, and the Anti-Slavery Society could be a DAB page.) If the suggested new name is too long, it could be London Anti-Slavery Society, which was actually its name during its last year of existence. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 01:31, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
- Support either, the current name is not WP:PRECISE; recommend a dab page at "Anti-Slavery Society" (t · c) buidhe 16:08, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
- Support. Society for the Mitigation and Gradual Abolition of Slavery Throughout the British Dominions is perhaps a bit wordy but definitely an improvement, and as a former official name should definitely be there as a redirect at least. I have no better suggestion. London Anti-Slavery Society also seems acceptable, and should also be a redirect, but I prefer the longer and definitely unambiguous name. Anti-Slavery Society should be a DAB for now. Andrewa (talk) 06:48, 10 December 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:OFFICIAL. What about Anti-Slavery Society (1823)? Vpab15 (talk) 18:37, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
- Hmmm, yes I see your point. But maybe Anti-Slavery Society (1823–1838), to make it clearer? Laterthanyouthink (talk) 00:04, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, that would work too. Vpab15 (talk) 11:00, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

- Comment I do agree that the long name is a bit long. (Hence putting it out for discussion rather than just moving the page myself.) Laterthanyouthink (talk) 00:04, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
- Comment I would suggest adding the dates since (a) it would make clear which anti-slavery society and (b) tell people the date range (it can get confusing which anti-slavery society when). I guess we should check the timeline and also whether "Anti-Slavery Society" was the commonly used name.
- Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade (1787-1823?) replaced by
- Society for the Mitigation and Gradual Abolition of Slavery Throughout the British Dominions (1823-1838) (this article) wound down and a new org created
- British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society (1838-1909) (it and the rest are in one article) which merged with another organization to become
- Anti-Slavery and Aborigines' Protection Society (1909-1947) name changed to
- Anti-Slavery Society (1947-1956) name changed to
- Anti-Slavery Society for the Protection of Human Rights (1956-1990) name changed to
- Anti-Slavery International for the Protection of Human Rights (1990-1995) name changed to
- Anti-Slavery International (1995-present)
I also did a search of "anti-slavery society" and of the full name in Hansard for the years in question. Nothing turned up for the latter but quite a number for the former (though some but not all referred to city or county anti-slavery groups). I would say the common name was extremely common. --Erp (talk) 05:21, 14 December 2020 (UTC)
- Vote? Thanks to all for your input. Does anyone object to Anti-Slavery Society (1823–1838) (with redirects from the others) then? buidhe, Andrewa, Vpab15, Erp? Laterthanyouthink (talk) 03:27, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
- I do not. (t · c) buidhe 03:42, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
- Support this alternate proposal. Ticks all the boxes IMO. Andrewa (talk) 15:20, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
Anti-Slavery Society (1823–1838) works for me too. Vpab15 (talk) 14:08, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
