I guess somebody would need to find an old copy of "The Wykehamist" or "The Trusty Servant" to cite any of this, but ...

I'm pretty sure Tony Wood was a Normandy veteran. His days as Head of History were long before his death (by the 1980s the Head of History at Winchester was Mark Stephenson, aka "the Bear"). I think he had been housemaster of Phil's (G), but again long before the 1980s when I crossed paths with him. I think by the mid 80s he had already stepped down from serious responsibilities but was still teaching (both History and English Lit to O-Level classes and giving history tutorials to older boys who were preparing for Oxbridge entrance) as long-serving elderly staff often used to do then. He had a serious heart attack in the early summer of 1985 but still carried on teaching a bit until his death. An avuncular character.
