demotions?

What's going on in McAulliffe's rank timeline? It shows two demotions, most notably that he was demoted to Lt Col from Brig Gen? According to the timeline, at the time of the famous "NUTS!" event he wouldn't have been a General, but the story certainly has him as a General during that time. 2600:8805:195C:A200:1532:9F94:2D84:42A3 (talk) 01:38, 24 August 2023 (UTC)

That is a good question and I looked into it. It appears to be because you can actually have a different rank in the "Army of the United States" and the "Regular Army" at the same time. To further the confusion the "Regular Army" is also known as the "U.S. Army." Apparently the differentiation is that "The Army of the U.S." was for draftees and reserve appointments, which includes the Army Reserve and National Guard, and the "The US Army" or "Regular Army" is the volunteer full-time professional army. I found this Senate record from 9/27/1949 that documents one of McAuliffe's promotions. https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/GPO-CRECB-1949-pt10/pdf/GPO-CRECB-1949-pt10-18.pdf It states, "Maj. Gen. Anthony Clement McAuliffe, O12263, Army of the United States (brigadier general, U.S. Army), for appointment as Chief of the Chemical Corps, United States Army, and for the appointment as major general in the Regular Army of the United States." So apparently he was already simultaneously Brig Gen in the US Army (Regular Army) and Maj Gen in the Army of the United States (Reserves), but then was promoted to also be Maj Gen in the US Army.
