Prose
[edit]Lead
[edit]He was responsible for rebuilding the College of the Holy Cross, of which he was president three times, after it was destroyed by fire and rescuing it from financial ruin and pressure to close by the Jesuits superiors: This sentence is hard to follow because of the distance between his two responsibilities and the double "and" at the end. Also, "Jesuits" -> "Jesuit"
- Rephrased. Ergo Sum 20:24, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Ciampi returned [to] the Holy Cross
where he expanded the campus and Fenwick Hall: This implies the Fenwick Hall is separate from the campus. Is this the case?
- Reordered for clarity. Ergo Sum 20:26, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
In his later years, he was the rector of the Jesuit novitiate in Frederick, Maryland, from 1883 to 1887: Timescale is given twice.
- Removed dates for clarity. Ergo Sum 20:26, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Early life
[edit]in Rome in the Papal States: Perhaps this is common phrasing that I haven't seen before, but isn't "in the Papal States, Rome" better since it avoids repetition of "in"?
- Rome is a city that was within the Papal States, which was a country. Ergo Sum 20:27, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
He came to be considered an accomplished Latinist: By whom?
- The source does not say who. It just states it as a matter of fact. Ergo Sum 21:22, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
In 1840, Ciampi accepted this invitation and sailed for the United States: The previous paragraph says he was teaching grammar in Italy from 1840-1844
- After taking another look at the sources, it seems 1840 was not correct. I've changed it to mid-1840s. Ergo Sum 20:31, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
to the United States. In 1840, Ciampi accepted this invitation and sailed for the United States: Repetition of "United States" is unneeded.
Link "Georgetown University chapel"
- There is no appropriate article to link this to. The university's current chapel was built decades later. Ergo Sum 20:32, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
as a minister or missionary: Could be interpreted as historians being unsure which it was. Perhaps change to "engaged in ministry and missionary work" or "ministry and outreach".
- I believe these terms actually had fairly specific meanings within the Jesuit order at this point in history. Not quite fixed enough to find a source specifically defining them though. Minister, I believe, usually referred to as kind of senior spiritual position within a Jesuit institution. Ergo Sum 20:34, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
First presidency
[edit]Jan Roothan-> "Jan Roothaan"
Is Joseph Aschwanden notable enough for a link?
- No, he did not lead any major Jesuit institution. Ergo Sum 20:35, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
a devastating fire: Pushing a narrative, better to let the facts speak for themselves.
- Changed to "serious". I think it is appropriate (the the source supports it) to describe the scale of the fire. It was not a small blaze. Ergo Sum 20:36, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Is there any other reliable sources describing the fire? One citation for an important and large paragraph isn't ideal.
- Other sources exist that describe the fact of the fire, but not that go into the specific details discussed here. If it is a reliable source, I don't there is any requirement that we need multiple ones. Ergo Sum 21:21, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
the entire building was destroyed, except for the east wing and library, whose contents were rescued from the fire: Makes it seem like only the items in the east wing and library were saved, and the rooms ended up burning.
- Yes, I do believe that's what happened, at least as regards the library. I've rephrased for clarity. Ergo Sum 20:37, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Ciampi wrote [to] Roothaan directly
but faced hesitation from Stonestreet: Unclear why this is important and what he hesitated about
- It is relevant because later on, the article describes how Stonestreet wanted to close the school altogether. Ergo Sum 20:38, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Second presidency
[edit]some at Holy Cross: Is it possible to provide who?
- Unfortunately, the source does not elaborate. Ergo Sum 20:39, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Link "pedagogy"
Beckx [to] wrote Ciampi that
new provincial superior, Burchard Villiger, wanted Beckx to remove Ciampi: Why?
- I can't find a source that says why. Ergo Sum 20:40, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Ciampi reformed the curriculum into a liberal arts curriculum: Repetition of curriculum, and link "liberal arts".
bringing it into closer alignment with the Ratio Studiorum: The lead says "he brought the curriculum into conformity with the Ratio Studiorum". "Conformity" and "closer alignment" aren't synonyms.
- Rephrased both instances for clarity. Ergo Sum 20:45, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Third presidency
[edit]and some complained: Possible to say who?
- The source does not elaborate. Ergo Sum 20:45, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
the superiors had redecided they would replace him: When did they decide to replace him in the first place?
- That was a typo. Fixed. Ergo Sum 20:46, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Loyola College in Maryland
[edit]Link "Italian accent"
- I don't believe there is any suitable article to link this to. It should also be pretty clear to any reader what this means. Ergo Sum 21:20, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Pastoral ministry
[edit]Link "Archbishop Gaetano Bedini", "episcopate", "John Bapst"
He then traveled throughout the eastern United States
- Eastern United States always has a definite article in front of it. Ergo Sum 20:48, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Redlink "Alphonse Charlier", "Louis Hippolyte Gache" , "John J. Murphy", "Archibald J. Tisdall", "Michael O'Kane"?
- Linked O'Kane. The others are not notable. Ergo Sum 20:51, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Link "St. Stanislaus novitiate"
- No article exists and it is not notable. Ergo Sum 20:51, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Link "St. Aloysius Church"
- It is already liked in the preceding paragraph. Ergo Sum 20:52, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Death and legacy
[edit]Looks good :)
Sources
[edit]Will continue when I have time :)
Reliability
[edit]Print encyclopedias, historical records, newspapers and published historical books, most are reliable.
[3] is a blog, is Pat McNamara an established expert?
- The Thy Honored Name source says the same thing, so I replaced it with that citation. Ergo Sum 20:58, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
I can't check the publisher of "Ryan, John J. (1903). Historical Sketch of Loyola College, Baltimore, 1852–1902" since IA is down, who published it?
- Almost certainly, it was published by the College of the Holy Cross, but it does not actually name the publisher in the work. Ergo Sum 20:52, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
[8]: Appears to be self-published? Though it feels like Lucas Fielding was not the sole author.
- I've clarified that Fielding was the editor, not author. Ergo Sum 20:56, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
Spot check
[edit][2a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j]
[2j]: Page 117 too
[7, 40, 54]: URL just brings you to the mainpage of a database.
- Found working links. Ergo Sum 21:17, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
[10a]: Just page 18
[10b]: haul water a quarter of a mile up the hill from the river: source says "nearly a quarter of a mile", also the paragraph seems to be supported by just page 18
- Clarified. Ergo Sum 20:59, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
[27]
[51]: Seems to be supported entirely by page 99
- Page 98 supports the part regarding many other Italians and provides some necessary context. Ergo Sum 21:06, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
[57]: Should be sfn formatted like the other "College of the Holy Cross" references
- This is a webpage, while the others are books. I believe this is correctly formatted using {{Cite web}}. Ergo Sum 21:11, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
