Merger proposal
[edit]I propose that Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula be merged into Ansar al-Sharia (Yemen), as the later has rebranded itself to the former according to both the US Government and the Jihadists. All media statements etc. are now being released in the name of Ansar al-Sharia, and as time goes on it will become difficult and somewhat pointless to keep both articles up to date with the same content. Gazkthul (talk) 07:56, 22 July 2013 (UTC)
- No -- not at all a good idea. These are clearly different organizations. Completely different. And have a great deal of independent info on each. Suggest a close, so we can dispense w/the unsightly tag.--Epeefleche (talk) 16:45, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
- "the Ansar al-Sharia group in Yemen (ASY) is part of a rebranding effort by AQAP. Shaykh Abu Zubayr Adil bin Abdullah al-Abab, AQAP's chief religious figure, in April 2011 first voiced this change by explaining that "the name Ansar al-Sharia is what we use to introduce ourselves in areas where we work to tell people about our work and goals." Know Your Ansar Al Sharia
- "The Department of State amended the Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and E.O. 13224 designations of al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula to include the new alias, Ansar al-Shari’a (AAS)... AAS – which is based in Yemen and is a separate entity from Ansar al-Shari’a in Libya – was established to attract potential followers to shari’a rule in areas under the control of AQAP. However, AAS is simply AQAP’s effort to rebrand itself, with the aim of manipulating people to join AQAP’s terrorist cause. - Terrorist Designations of Ansar al-Sharia as an Alias for Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula Gazkthul (talk) 23:02, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
- There was no consensus for the merge, herewith reverted by me.GreyShark (dibra) 17:30, 5 October 2014 (UTC)
Merger II
[edit]Per reasons described by Gazkthul, the article needs to be merged. It is the same organisation as AQAP, as the U.S State Department notes and the article is so useless in that there is no unique information not already found in the AQAP article. StanMan87 (talk) 04:23, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
- Then the article should be merged into AQAP. However, they are still slightly different, and there are multiple terrorist organizations with the name "Ansar al-Sharia", so no, this is not a good idea. LightandDark2000 (talk) 02:33, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
- It should be merged into the AQAP article for the reasons cited above. They are not different, they are exactly the same article with the same references with the same information in the info-box. Just the complete lack of information illustrates this fact that the two are entirely the same, as there is no point copying and pasting from AQAP and putting into this article. - This group is slightly different, being that it is primarily a coalition of forces from multiple Terrorist groups, most notably from AQAP. Although the group may have merged into AQAP, I haven't seen any sources confirming this, and this group did have a different origin than that of AQAP, so this group is somewhat different. In any case, this group close coordination with the al-Qaeda affiliate, it is not synonymous with AQAP. LightandDark2000 (talk) 08:28, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

There has been no further comment for nearly a month, so I am closing this discussion as no consensus. LightandDark2000 (talk) 22:52, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
Inadequate
[edit]The need for better coverage is glaringly obvious. Have contributors gone silent?--Wikipietime (talk) 14:12, 26 June 2017 (UTC)
