African American

[edit]

Excuse, but how is it possible to have written this entire article without once mentioning the fact the Ms. Smith is African American? Please, fellow editors, this sort of "oversight"/exclusion of information must stop. I've come across this in too many other Wiki bios of African Americans to believe this is entirely accidental. Our articles should not mislead our readers by depriving them of this very important piece of information. Cgingold (talk) 00:55, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The above appears to have been addressed. However I was wondering if Smith is biracial, i.e. of mixed descent. Anyone know? Quis separabit? 01:41, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Have added content about being African American, as she says it has been fundamental to her life. She talked about initial difficulty in getting acting jobs when on Henry Louis Gates, Jr.'s show, Finding Your Roots, because no one knew how to classify her. Will have to watch it. She appears to have some European ancestry.Parkwells (talk) 18:47, 31 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Lead image

[edit]

A part of another person's head and shoulder are poking into the subject in the 2009 image. It is a poor crop (though presumably as good as it could have been), while the 1999 image is a quality portrait. MOS:IMAGES says: "A biography should lead with a portrait photograph of the subject alone, not with other people." There is no requirement that the image be "as recent as we can make it", and that certainly is not WP:BLP policy. Our article about Sophia Loren uses a photo from 1962; the one about Jimmy Carter uses a photo from 1977. It is also not true that "lack of attribution is policy" and I cannot begin to imagine where such a misconception could come from. Surtsicna (talk) 01:46, 7 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
