[edit]Yes of course they should be merged - where was this article the other day when I searched on Angus McBean and it came up with nothing?
Angus McBain - Jail sentence in England
[edit]HELP NEEDED. No article on Angus McBain would be complete without a reference to the fact he was jailed (for 5 years, I think) under England's (pre 1967) anti homosexuality laws. I, however, cannot find an on-line reference anywhere. Can anyone help provide one? The London Times covered the case. It would clearly be wrong to include this fact without a solid reference. I was apprentice to John Vickers who was in turn trained by Angus, so I know the history well but my word is not a reference (particularly in such regard)

- Google search "Angus mcbean" prison produces numerous references. Kittybrewster ☎ 12:30, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
- His gay life and imprisonment are extensively chronicled on the "Out Stories Bristol" website [1] written by Jonathan Rowe in 2021, with a note "Additional material on arrests and trial of McBean and others: Andrew Foyle". It says he was sentenced to four years in prison. The Art Blat website [2] says without attribution that he served two years. -- Hugh7 (talk) 08:07, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
Example of McBean's theatrical work
[edit]In the course of creating an article on an opera singer of the 1940s/50s, Anne Sharp (OK she's my mother), I decided to use a photograph of her in costume which has always stood in its frame on her music cabinet. On removing it from its frame for scanning I discovered it wasn't just any old snapshot but was stamped on the back with the name of Angus McBean. I've uploaded under fair use guidelines because it's 60 years old and the only good photo of the subject at that point in her career. Anyway, does anyone think it would also be appropriate to put the thumbnail on the Angus McBean page? It's a helluva good picture. Morag Kerr (talk) 11:22, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
- Realising that a thumbnail would probably not be appropriate, I've included an internal link to the page the photo appears on. Morag Kerr (talk) 01:04, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
Work as a theatre set designer
[edit]Before he became a renowned photographer, McBean apparently worked as a theatre set designer, but this is not mentioned in the article. One source is here - "The origins of the Marquee club's name are connected to its decoration from the days of the ballroom hall, having been devised by Angus McBean in the shape of a circus masquerade in red and white stripes. This distinctive look would remain for many years even in the later club at Wardour Street. Angus McBean, who was at the time a designer for theatre sets, was later better known for his work as a portrait photographer....". This is way outside my areas of limited expertise. Does anyone have better sources, to add something to the article? Ghmyrtle (talk) 08:36, 1 May 2014 (UTC)

A long interview about his most significant work, which isn't even mentioned here
