Notable?
[edit]Was this a distinct enough war in its own right to justify an article, or should it just be part of the wider article on the Seven Years War? Lord Cornwallis (talk) 20:55, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Anglo-Spanish War (1761–63) → Anglo-Spanish War (1762–63) – The war started in 1762, not 1761. See article: 'This brought war with Great Britain in January 1762.' There is no reference to 1761 anywhere. See also Seven Years' War section '1761–62'. King Philip V of Spain (talk) 15:18, 24 August 2013 (UTC)
- Comment it seems that British privateers were already engaging with Spain in 1761 (such as the British East India Company invading Spanish colonies). -- 76.65.128.222 (talk) 00:36, 25 August 2013 (UTC)
- Comment Note this statement from the article: "Furthermore, Spain suffered from attacks by English privateers in Spanish waters, and claimed compensation." This is referring to the period before Spain joined the war. As to the British East India Company invading Spanish colonies, please list an example of that, as I do not know any. King Philip V of Spain (talk) 16:07, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
- Support: It's fairly clear that the consensus among academics is that the war should be called the Anglo-Spanish War of 1762 or should at least acknowledge it lasted from 1762-1763. See here, here, and here. Additionally, the formal war was declared January 4, 1762. Anything that happened in 1761 is prelude, and can still be discussed. Privateering is per se an act of war, but it was not so in the colonial sphere, which saw frequent instances of "officially-condoned piracy", especially during times of peace.
