[edit]The article is unreferenced apart from the recent expenses scandal. The body of the article needs refs, a couple are suggested. Widefox (talk) 00:16, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
this mirror comment
[edit]In 1988 a Daily Mirror article revealed that as well as being MP for East Berkshire he was MP 'for merchant bankers Morgan Grenfell as well.' An internal memorandum to his colleagues from director David Douglas Home declared: "As you are all aware, Andrew MacKay, MP, advises us on our political strategy...I do not believe we are using his considerable talents sufficiently as far as our clients are concerned, many of whom are extremely naïve as to how to work with and use their MPs to advantage. He comes into the bank once a month at times of which you will be advised." A Commons debate was demanded to look into the links. MP Bob Cryer said: "Morgan Grenfell are actually inviting clients to have him representing them. This is clearly a very serious undermining of the job of an MP." [1]
Is this attack story cited anywhere else? It is also 20 years old, what were the repercussions of the controversy? Off2riorob (talk) 15:36, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
- Also have a look at the daily mirror[1] , I would say it is worthless as a political citation. Off2riorob (talk) 15:38, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
- The article I've quoted is taken from a collection of Paul Foots journalism. (Words as Weapons) He used to have a page once a week in the Mirror. He is not worthless as a source. I don't see what you mean about repercussions - it's just an example of the corrupt practices that seem to have come easy to Mackay. Its just a part of his biography. Was he in Parliament to concern himself with his constituents concerns or advise Morgan Grenfell on their political strategy. Isn't that a different job? Sayerslle (talk) 16:28, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry but I find it to be meaningless critisism, Is it cited anywhere else? What happened as a result of Mckays actions? Where there any charges or any consequences for his actions? Off2riorob (talk) 16:31, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
- It is excessive opinionated critisism and is being given undue weight in the bio. imo Off2riorob (talk) 16:35, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

- its a kind of 'cash for influence' story. Isn't that corrupt. imo it should remain, but if it goes , other egs of his corruption exist..Sayerslle (talk) 16:39, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
- Fiddling his expenses a bit or doing a favour (cash for influence) is quite normal in the real world, I don't hold people up to very high expectations, usually if there is actually a legal charge I find that a good reason to judge them a bit harsher. This guy is not on my Xmas list but in a bio, a minor claim of corruption that was perhaps a storm in a teacup and came to nothng is not much value. Off2riorob (talk) 16:54, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
