Shouldn't this page be called USS Andrew Doria, like other ship articles in the Continental Navy. Sure the US Navy didn't technically exist but there are lots of ships that served in the Continental Navy that are now referred to as "USS ...." Just wondering. see USS Randolph (1776) or USS Bonhomme Richard (1765)--$1LENCE D00600D (talk) 01:52, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There are several reasons why I moved this article:
  • Most importantly, none of the sources refer to Andrew Doria with "USS"
  • The U.S. Navy Style Guide says "Do not use 'USS' for ships before 1909"
  • USS = United States Ship — the United States did not even exist for the first half of this brig's life
This issue was brought up at least once on the WP:SHIP talk page, but I don't think it really went anywhere.
Also, the WP:SHIPS Manual of Style says "... do not use prefixes that predate their use, even though some authors sometimes 'backdate' prefixes in this way." —Diiscool (talk) 13:30, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
