Remove IMDB Link?
[edit]The IMDB link might be removed as the only thing listed there is a dedication to Bazin from 400 Blows. There's nothing about Bazin as an actor/director/etc. --Jeremy Butler 12:59, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Removed some names
[edit]I removed Robert Bresson, Luis Buñuel, Marcel Carné, Jean Cocteau, Henri Langlois, Luchino Visconti and Jean Renoir because they were not New Wave directors (Langlois was not even a director at all) and so do not fit in that sentence. They might be used elsewhere in the articles, however. --Jeremy Butler 13:20, 3 January 2006 (UTC)
Relation to Herve Bazin
[edit]I have seen several mis-connections between Herve and Andre Bazin elsewhere and nothing in either biography here on wiki. Were they related? If so, can someone add this to the wiki? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.58.37.78 (talk) 18:34, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
Corrected age?
[edit]If the dates of his birth and death are, in fact, correct, he was 40 and not 39 when he died, so I changed the next paragraph. If the dates aren't correct, could someone make the correction? It should be consistent in both places. --Jmcnally 02:34, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
Added Visual Effects
[edit]Added visual effects to the list of Bazin's "dislikes". Perhaps "compositing" would be a better word. For example, Bazin's admiration for the balloon in Le Ballon Rouge is admiration for a visual effect - but Bazin enjoys the effect insofar as it was produced "on location" or "in front of the camera", (so to speak), rather than through any subsequent manipulation of the image (eg. through compositing). So it is not visual effects per se, but the manner in which they are made, ie. "after the fact", that attracts Bazin's criticism.
- Yes, in contemporary Hollywood speak, such "on location" effects are now being called "practical effects" to distinguish them from CGI effects (or what would have been lab effects prior to CGI). Various directors are preferring such practical effects over CGI. But an important point to note is that, in addition to practical effects, there were also some "after the fact" effects that Bazin also appreciated, in particular: Surrealist photo-collage. So what distinguishes photo-collage from any other after-the-fact effects? Answering that question gives a much better insight into Bazin's particular disposition towards effects. For the distinction he is making is not strictly technical. It's to do with the result of an effect far more than the means by which an effect might be created. The effect of photo-collage is what Bazin would call a "monstrosity" which is not to be interpreted as a put down, but a complement. The photo-collage effect, as Bazin understood it, was meant to be "monstrous". Or to put it another way: the monstrosity is being magnified, rather than attempts made to minimize such (as traditional Hollywood effects would do). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.170.56.4 (talk) 23:58, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
External Links: findarticles.com?
[edit]To me, findarticles.com contains "objectionable amounts of advertising", which puts the links to it in conflict with Wikipedia:External links. --Jeremy Butler 11:35, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
Conversation with David Jewell
[edit]Are we sure this is correct? David Jewell would of been 70-something years old. But if you watch waking life, the man in the conversation is not in his 70s and doesn't sound british. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwYXcZOiLeM&feature=related —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.24.75.202 (talk) 19:37, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
