Changes to InfoBox

[edit]

I have made some cosmetic changes to atypical features or to improve clarity in the infobox, including:

  • Removing the Scottish Labour Spokesperson for Health and Sport position from the collapsed infobox because it was a recent position and there aren't an excessive number of them.
  • Removing the two elected offices from the collapsed infobox as I thought they should be immediately visible.
  • Adding the Shadow Ministerial role to a new infobox to avoid confusion with any similar positions in Scottish Parliament. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Finecolours (talkcontribs) 20:12, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Finecolours: Thanks for providing a breakdown of the changes and reasonings. I might revert for now and look at implementing some of these suggestions later, since the infobox order is now pretty confusing. If he is elected, the order will change soon anyway. Ethnic minority leader - due weight of sources

[edit]

I believe there is due weight from sources to call Sarwar the first ethnic minority leader of a major party full stop, even if this article in the Spectator has been cited in an edit summary to say otherwise. BBC, Sky, Independent, the Herald. Jews of a European background - like those mentioned in the Spectator article - are a religious minority, and non-religious ones like Miliband can still face antisemitism, but they are generally not considered an ethnic minority in the UK, which is usually a term synonymous with what Americans would call "people of color". Unknown Temptation (talk) 18:19, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There are at least some Brits who consider Disraeli to have been part of an ethnic minority. E.g. the author of this New Statsmen article. And Sarwar being the first party leader from an ethnic minortiy has been contested (in the Specator article you mentioned). I found those two articles via a short Google search today, there might be many more examples. The news articles you mentioned are fairly new and might get corrected in the future. I'd say lets wait a couple weeks and not put something in the article that might turn out wrong. --Distelfinck (talk) 18:38, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Aren't Scots considered an ethnic minority within the United Kingdom? Just in this century you have Blair, Brown, Iain Duncan Smith, and even Cameron (patrilineally Scottish), you also had John Smith. You also have Michael Howard (ethnically Jewish Romanian/Welsh), Neil Kinnock (Welsh), and old Cleggers (3/4 Dutch, 1/4 Baltic-German). So I'm not sure what the claim is here but if it's that Sarwar is the first ethnic minority leader of a major party, then it is patently absurd. 84.211.51.170 (talk) 10:38, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ha well we're definitely a type of minority within the UK as a whole but that's our nationality rather than ethnic background. "Scottish" is like "American" so far as nationalities go. The melting pot is implied. There's the international Scottish diaspora but they're less relevant when talking about Scottish/British demographics. Alex (talk) 15:15, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I would argue that as well as the concept of civic Scottish nationality you reference, there also exists a concept of ethnic, cultural, and linguistic Scottishness. The children of a Scottish couple who moves to England, whose ancestors many generations back are all Scottish, are surely entitled to describe themselves as Scottish in some way? Scotland does not have the history of being a melting point to same scale that America does. If we take your suggestion that the only type of Scottishness is that in the civic national sense, then wouldn't Sarwar therefore not be a member of an ethnic minority? But I think we are digressing from what's strictly relevant, as we have examples of other non-Scots as party leaders.84.211.51.170 (talk) 00:27, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
