Population data

[edit]

In my big copyedit of a few minutes ago, I removed the following table and integrated its numbers into the section "Modern Amykles".

Year Population Change
1981 1,034 -
1991 589 -545/-52.71%

Problem: the data in the table is inconsistent; if the population figures are right, the change figure is wrong, and vice versa. The original remark in "Modern Amykles" had it that the village "lost over half its population", which relies on the change figure being right. I removed that remark and used the figures of 1034 and 589, assuming the subtraction was done wrong. Where did this data come from? What should the numbers be? --Stebulus 09:31, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In whose honor?

[edit]

This article states that the Hyakinthia were held in honor of Apollo Amyklaios, but others claim that they were held in honor of Hyakinthos. Which is correct? Haiduc (talk) 01:56, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Eponymous errors of the ancients

[edit]

"The ancient city was founded by Amyclas, the son of Lacedaemon."

There being no citation for this remark, I am unaware which ancient Greek historian said this, but polis names being traced to mythical founders was a common, and often erroneous, explanation put forward by Greek historians and proud polis-dwellers who knew nothing of the true origin of the name. Therefore, I will add "according to some sources". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.90.55.99 (talk) 06:13, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
