Recent reversion of large addition

[edit]

I concur with Sensei48's reversion of the large addition, but maybe from an additional angle. I think that degree of relevance, impact in the subject area, should be taken into account along with prominence and commercial success. I did a medium speed pass through the references at the Chapin article and the only genre statement I found in them in them said "pop". I would probably say "singer-songwriter" first, "pop" second and "folk" third. Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 19:53, 18 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I am wondering if Billie Holliday really belongs in the lede, or anywhere in the article, and actually the same is true for Bessie Smith & Ma Rainey. My inclination is to remove them but not right away, give you a chance to defend their placement. Carptrash (talk) 16:32, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Those names were added to the lead by @Modernist:, pinging for input. Schazjmd (talk) 16:59, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm a fan (I have an image of her on my home page) but IMO she is clearly not folk music. The term isn't even mentioned once in her article. I'll take her out, feel free to put her back in if anyone feels otherwise. Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 17:29, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith were influential and admired by Odetta, Dylan, Joan Baez, and most of the major stars of the folk revival, they belong...Modernist (talk) 21:57, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
We probably should change wording to clarify.....in essence along the lines of what you just said. The current wording sort of implies that they were early folk musicians. North8000 (talk) 01:37, 31 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I reverted my removal of those two. North8000 (talk) 01:41, 31 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
