Source: Pages 568–569 of this dissertation includes a long quote from Garrison's piece in the Newburyport Herald reacting to American Writers, including: "A word of advice to Mr. Neal before we part. If he venture to place his foot again on our soil, we say — Critic! gardez bien! or you may reap that reward for your vile labors, which you so richly merit."

Article is new enough, long enough, and well-sourced. Earwig's results flagged only proper nouns and properly attributed quotes, and though I was unable to access many of the article's sources, the few I was able to spot check showed no reasons for concern. QPQ done. The hook is interesting and backed up by the quote from a reliable source provided by the nominator. My one admittedly small quibble with the hook is that I'd prefer the bolded link to be the first one encountered. I'd propose:

ALT0a: ... that after reading American Writers, William Lloyd Garrison told John Neal to be on guard should he return to the United States?
