Political Stance Section

Main Picture

I thought that putting a picture and infobox on the main ACP page improved the overall quality of the article, so I did so. I am just letting everybody know because I saw that on other articles that when putting a main image on an article, talk about it on the discussion page. Additional Information and Suggestions

Hi, I'm an ACP employee and just wanted to provide some information and suggestions to help improve this page.

History ACP was founded by Dr. Heinrich Stern (1867-1918), a German-born physician who came to the United States at age 20 to study medicine. He later became a US citizen and practiced internal medicine in New York City. After attending the 1913 conference of the Royal College of Physicians of London, he returned to the states to establish a similar society in the US.

In January 1915, the American Congress of Internal Medicine was incorporated for the purposes of holding an annual clinical congress to facilitate scientific intercourse among physicians interested in internal medicine. In May 1915, the American College of Physicians was incorporated as an educational institution with a broader scope of purpose.

ACP sponsored its first annual meeting in 1917, known then as Clinical Sessions, to facilitate scientific discussion among internists. The first official Annual Session took place at the William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on December 27-28, 1917.

Color Bar

It would be useful to note when the American College of Physicians began to admit non-white doctors. When Louis Tompkins Wright became the first black Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1934, Time magazine noted that the ACP remained all-white.
