[edit]"Despite the Suns 4-1 Western Conference Finals elimination to the San Antonio Spurs, Stoudemire performed brilliantly, averaging 37 points during the series and positioning himself as one of the best players in the league for years to come." How can he be one of the best players "for years to come" if it was just last year? Billy Shears 20:32, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
I definitely think we should take out the individual references to plays in the career section. The career section is more for saying when this player was drafted, front office type moves, and FG % and other statistics, not "his monster dunk over 7'1 Michael Olowakandi.--Xacidx 04:48, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
Can someone reference properly for me
[edit]I added the trivia section for Amare Stoudemire but i don't know how to reference it properly. If someone wants to fix that for me, here is the link -- http://www.nba.com/playoffs2006/fivethings_stoudemire_060404.html -- I tried my best in referencing it but it doesn't seem to go with the style of the rest of the page. Thanks
- I took care of it and changed the wording a bit. --WHS 05:05, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
Name?
[edit]I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain Amare doesn't have an accent over the "e" in his first name and I think the title of the article should reflect that. --WHS 05:02, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
- You are indeed wrong, the "e" in his name is accentuated. It's actually spelt Amaré and not Amare, though it's pronounced Uh-mar-E (unlike Touré which is pronounced Two-ray). -The following comment was added by NAfr 9:48, 16 May 2007.
Shouldn't we spell it like this "Amar'e Stoudemire"? Not Amaré, not Amare, but Amar'e. Reference? http://www.nba.com/2008/news/features/dave_mcmenamin/11/20/112008amareqa/index.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dark lord 18 (talk • contribs) 01:44, November 22, 2008
- Profile on NBA.com lists his name as Amar'e, not Amaré. Not sure how to change the title of the page though. http://www.nba.com/playerfile/amare_stoudemire/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by Finnegan705 (talk • contribs) 04:22, November 22, 2008
- I didn't realize the change was official. I've moved the article from "Amaré" to "Amar'e". Thanks for providing the links. --Mosmof (talk) 05:02, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
- Bad idea. It is Amaré, not Amar'e. Anyone with the slightest knowledge of punctuation would recognize that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to have an apostrophe in the middle of your name. Like Sports Illustrated once wrote, Amaré added an accent mark to his name, not an apostrophe. ––bender235 (talk) 20:33, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

- Have you bothered to read either of the links provided here and in the article?
- From October 2008:
In NBA circles, Stoudemire is known to be high maintenance, unpredictable. In his brief career, he's worn two numbers and spelled his first name three ways. In the latest Suns media guide, Amaré is now Amar'e. I'm sure he has his reasons.
- From November 2008:
Q: First you change your jersey number from No. 32 to No. 1, now you change your name from Amare to Amaré to Amar'e. What gives?
--Mosmof (talk) 20:50, 22 February 2009 (UTC)A: There is no name change, that's how my name as always been spelled. It just hasn't been spelled that way, for some reason, for my whole career. I don't know why. That's been wrong since I was a rookie. For the past seven years all you guys have been spelling my name wrong.
- Anyone with the slightest knowledge of punctuation would recognize that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to have an apostrophe in the middle of your name. Have you told this to Mike D'Antoni?-- Randomglitter (talk) 23:48, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
- Anyone with the slightest knowledge of punctuation would recognize that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to have an apostrophe in the middle of your name. Many languages that have glottal stops will place apostrophes in the middle of names. See, for instance, Ya'akov, which is my name. Generally, names don't respect prescriptive punctuation rules. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 147.161.12.148 (talk) 19:39, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
numero uno
[edit]shouldn't we have a picture of Amare in his new uniform number (#1) instead of the #32 that is prominently displayed? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 203.205.122.196 (talk) 23:15, 31 December 2006 (UTC).

Knicks
[edit]Can we change him to officially a Knick? They held a press conference today announcing that he's a Knick which he was in attendance. There are pictures and everything if you want proof. @Metfan722 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.193.96.91 (talk) 00:17, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- That wasn't a press conference - and nothing can be made official until July 8th.[1] Blahblah32blahblah (talk) 00:22, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

- This is not editing based on speculation or anything like that. Amar'e appeared in a Knicks hat and claimed "NY is back". This is official, and all contracts takes weeks to finalize. Wikipedia always changes players based on when they agree and all parties involved point in that direction. You know it takes several players weeks or even a few months to sign an official contract well after their welcome press conference and millions of jerseys have been sold. None of us know for sure when a player actually signs the bottom line. Theres a chance Stoudemire signs it at 12:01 on the 8th or just as easily August 15th. But Amar'e and his agent and the Knicks have seen a draft of it and agreed to it. It's done. Everyone knows it! --Airtuna08 (talk) 17:02, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

- I don't think you're using the word "official" correctly. "Official" is when the contract's actually signed, like, when there's an official document. What you meant to say is "unofficial". Y
- Uh, where do you get the idea that it takes "weeks or even a few months" to sign an official contract? Players can't suit up, or even participate in official team activities without signing a contract.
- "Wikipedia always changes players based on when they agree and all parties involved point in that direction." No it doesn't. Or shouldn't, anyway.
- "None of us know for sure when a player actually signs the bottom line."
- Except when the player and owner are on TV physically signing a contract, which is, like, pretty much every time.
- It might help you to think of it this way. Say a guy proposes to his girlfriend and she says yes. They're not married at that point. How about when they have an engagement party? Nope, not married yet. When the two get together and set a wedding date? Still not married. How about the day before the wedding, when all the guests are in town? Not yet. How about when the priest pronounces them husband and wife? There you go! (well, there's the whole business of marriage certificate and all, but you get the point). Mosmof (talk) 17:30, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- Of course they can't play until the deal is official. It takes weeks to months though. Mark Teixeira's press conference with the Yankees was in December but the deal wasn't officially signed till February. It's always going to get done before the next season starts, but it takes time to finish up the legal thingys. I've been following sports since I was 4 years old. I know how it works. Coming on here at 12:01am on Thursday to put him on the Knicks isn't going to mean the deal is official yet either. But when Amar'e is seen at MSG with the Knicks brass in a Knicks hat and proclaiming "NY is back", the deal is done! You don't think Amar'e and his agent saw a rough copy of the contract and have shaken on it? Come on dude. You're taking the July 8th rule way too literally. Everyone in the world knows he is a Knick. --Airtuna08 (talk) 18:38, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- They're married, they just haven't gotten the certificate stamped yet, but you get the point! haha
- I've been following sports for a gazillion billion years, and I've never heard of contract signings taking months. You realize NBA teams have lawyers who can whip up contracts in a matter of days, no, hours, right? (it also helps that NBA contracts have fewer incentive clauses and are more strictly bound by the CBA, so drawing them up isn't a huge deal) I mean, if it takes, weeks, even months, then that's gotta be hell on those NBDL callups on 10-day contracts!
- And look, here's Vince Carter signing a contract on July 13, 2009, the very day the contract was announced! And Allen Iverson and Chris Wallace putting pen to paper on, not weeks and months after, September 10, 2009.
- Here's an analogy that you might be able to understand. You have a job interview and you do well enough, you get an offer. After some negotiation, both sides agree to number and terms. Now, you don't actually become an employee (that is, you don't get benefits, paycheck, all that) until you return the signed offer letter, and until the start date indicated on the offer letter. You walking out of the office and screaming "Acme Widgets is back!" doesn't make it, believe it or not, official. Or, Barack Obama was elected President in November 2008, but he was only President Elect until January 2009. Just because you are certain to take a position, doesn't mean you already have the position. Mosmof (talk) 20:14, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- Some take weeks or even months. Obviously many take shorter than that, especially those in season with meaningless players. But star athlete's contracts can take alot longer. Amar'e is a Knick, you guys are taking things way too literally and I have been requesting for certain pages to be protected to keep people from speculating or changing things based on rumors. But when the player comes out of MSG with a Knicks hat on and says "NY is back", I think we can change it here. If you guys want to wait till 12:01amET on Thursday, I won't change it till then, but it seems ridiculous. --Airtuna08 (talk) 21:45, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- It's very simple - nobody is allowed to sign until July 8th.... There's no interpretation... no matter what anyone says they're going to do. Blahblah32blahblah (talk) 21:56, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- Again, way too literal. The deal is done and all that waits is his signature and you don't know when he'll officially sign it. So you can update it July 8th and he may not sign it till the week or two after. --Airtuna08 (talk) 22:26, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, he's going to be a Knick, and that's mentioned in the article. But he's not officially a Knick until he signs, and that can't happen until the 8th. Enigmamsg 22:27, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- You know he's a Knick, I know he's a Knick, the whole world knows it! haha... you guys are hot stuff and taking the wikipedia guidelines WAY too literally... --Airtuna08 (talk) 02:32, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- It's not us and our guidelines, it's the NBA's rules. Show me where on the Knicks' roster page Stoudemire is listed, and you can add the Knicks as his team. --Muboshgu (talk) 02:43, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- Also, I DON'T know that he's a Knick, but I do not he's not a Knick yet. I know this because I know he will be a Knick. And I know that "is" and "will be" are two different things Mosmof (talk) 02:50, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

He's a Knick. --Airtuna08 (talk) 03:04, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
That roster also includes players that have become free agents too. It isn't updated after the season except for draft picks. I agree with TunaFish, he is a knick. --FourteenClowns (talk) 05:01, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- That's because those free agents are still on the Knicks in a sense. The Knicks still control things like their Bird Rights. The Knicks could still pull a sign-and-trade with Lee, getting him a bigger contract because he would be resigning. Etc. Really, Stoudemire's page should still list him as a Sun. --Muboshgu (talk) 05:09, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
They would have to SIGN him first to do a sign-in deal. Technically, Amar'e could sign with the Heat then be traded to the Knicks. Obviously that has no monetary benefit to him opposed to be traded by his former team.
- You missed my point. Only the players' current team can offer him the extra year and money. That's because the team retains rights. --Muboshgu (talk) 05:17, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- As a free agent, no one has his rights. A player that is a free agent will still be on the team's roster page because otherwise they'd have to drop him from the system all together. They wouldn't want to do that. Let the onslaught of edits begin in a little more than 10 hours. --Airtuna08 (talk) 17:52, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- No, a players most recent team retains Bird rights, if the player has earned them. And there are plenty of player pages for free agents that aren't dropped at all. --Muboshgu (talk) 18:04, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

- FWIW, the pattern among other sports is to leave a player with his old team until all hurdles of joining the new team are cleared. In the case of David Silva, the contract is signed! However, it's pending a medical examination after the World Cup—and until he gets the exam, we have him listed with his old team. Since signing a contract is a known hurdle the Stoudemire being a Knick, he should be left as a free agent. —C.Fred (talk) 18:09, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- Agreed. For all we know, there's something terribly wrong with Stoudemire's knee that they find in a physical that has yet to be conducted, which nullifies the deal. As a Knick fan, I'm sure hoping that's not the case, and that LeBron is going to tell us tomorrow night that he's always wanted to play with Amare, but you never know. Lots of baseball editors were changing Mike Lowell's team info when there was a pending trade to the Texas Rangers this spring, only for us to find that Lowell didn't pass the Rangers' physical exam and the trade was off. Whoops! --Muboshgu (talk) 18:14, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- Not to mention he could change his mind up until the point where the contract is signed. It has happened with players being announced as a deal is done, and then the player went in another direction at the last moment. It's not likely but its enough to be an issue. Besides, we are not in a race. -DJSasso (talk) 18:38, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
Changes Changed
[edit]I see the changes are made were changed. Anyway I decided to remove all the little paragraphs and just put them together. Those little paragraphs don't say much and are barely paragraphs they are all basically in regard to knee surgeries, playoff games against the San Antonio Spurs and Eye Surgery. I prefer the format I had it in because most good articles on wikipedia about notable basketball players see Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant are like that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.47.23.254 (talk) 03:27, 22 October 2011 (UTC)
Section on 2011 NBA lockout
[edit]I decided to add a small paragraph about his role in the lockout, he is important because he is a player rep and he has done a lot during the lockout. 00:52, 19 November 2011 (UTC)00:52, 19 November 2011 (UTC)~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.47.31.91 (talk)24.47.31.91 (talk) 01:08, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
Redundant
[edit]"Together they had a child, Marwan, who became Stoudemire's half brother." Is it necessary to precise it considering that if one of your parents has a son with another person, that child is your half brother by definition? It's like saying "my parents had a daugther, who became my sister." Superfluous.

- Not done for now: It's all conjecture cited to unnamed "league sources". ESPN further states: "The contract will not become official until Stoudemire clears waivers on Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET." – Muboshgu (talk) 17:40, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Hebrew/Judaism section
[edit]I have reworked the paragraph about Judaism:
- three wikilinks to Black Hebrew Israelites, two of which were WP:EASTEREGGs, was excessive;
- I've removed the parts about Idan Ravin. Perhaps there is an insinuation that Ravin encouraged his embrace of Judaism? If true this needs to be stated and cited explicitly; otherwise he seems irrelevant here.

Post-conversion Name
[edit]Stoudamire completed conversion to Judaism, and has changed his first name to Yehoshaphat. It seems incongruous to preference the post-conversion names of other well-known athletes who converted mid-career but preserve this entry under his pre-conversion name. He is still better known by Amar'e, and for sure "Amar'e Stoudamire" should redirect to this page, but the name of the page should reflect his new name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 147.161.12.148 (talk) 19:44, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
