Company Nomenclature

The company always writes its name in capitals as ALSTOM but this is just an affectation as it is not a six-letter abbreviation for anything. Andy G 18:12, 28 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Not necessarily. Copy-editors and writers of style guides for newspapers have long experience on this kind of thing. For example, the company that likes to write its name "BAE SYSTEMS" was not successful in instructing newpapers to capitalize it all; "BAE Systems" seems to be what has stuck in the broadsheets. Other new ways to write trademarked names (which seem to me to be entirely derived from whatever the current logo is...) have been more successful: car magazines used to write 'Quattro' (for various Audi cars), but now 'quattro' is quite common. Of course, computer companies are some of the most "innovative" in their orthographic strictures: eBay, CorelDRAW!, etc. Although a computer magazine might bow to Corel's instructions, no broadsheet would, and rightly so. They've sinced changed back to something more normal. Why should a company logo dictate typography of a company name? Hotlorp 13:55, 17 Oct 2003 (UTC)

The H originaly comes from the name of another company. Alsthom was created in 1928 from three companies: CGE (Companie Générale d'Electricité), Alsacienne Société and Thomson houston. In 1998, a major change in shares occured, GEC and Alcatel partly left Alsthom which changed its name for Alstom.Tiwan 18:02, September 2, 2005 (UTC)

University Cafeteria

The University of Lincoln has a cafeteria named the Alstom Atrium. Nobody seems quite sure what the connection is but it uses their logo. Are there any others? 194.80.52.106 (talk) 13:47, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Here is the reason for the name of Alstom Atrium

“The university has strong links with Alstom Power, who were strong supporters of the project to create a university in Lincoln in the 1990s. Our atrium in the main academic building is named after the company"

Corruption Investigations

I was very surprised to see that no mention of the Swiss and French bribery investigations in the article, it reads more like a marketing blurb! Subsequently I have listed the Swiss and French cases in 2007-2008 and the new SFO investigation in order to bring a little balance to the entryTwobells (talk) 11:37, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Changes -added third section, some rewrite, removed list

I added a section of the "transmission" division.

I think the other two sections still need a minor rewrite, and probably expansion, but not lists. The "references" section are a little odd - I think they could be presented in a diffferent way - maybe more as prose.

I also removed the lists below , for now. The problem is lack of context, and references. A List of Alstom products and projects article may be suitable in the long term.

Fix this yourself

August 22, 2008 Swiss police carried out a series of house searches at various locations throughout Switzerland, including the offices of the Alstom AG in Baden, the Swiss government said in a statement.[1]

Whoever added this didn't feel the need to actually give us the slightest clue what the police search was about or how it relates to any of the corruption investigations mentioned in the article. On Wednesday the 24th March 2010 three directors were arrested in a UK corruption probe by the Serious Fraud Office. The arrests followed a raid on Alstom offices in Ashby de la Zouch and Rugby UK. The SFO released a statement stating it believed bribes had been paid in order to win foreign contracts.[2]

In this case the argument that Alstom has made many legal challenges needs to be shown using reliable sources, rather than a synthesis based on a collection of legal cases. History - error in the companies name in the whole list

Hi, why is it always "Alsthom" in the history table. I wanted to correct it because I saw it in one part but on edit I saw that it was wrong (It has to be Alstom, but it is Alsthom), is there any reason for this (changed name in the past or something?!)

Hi,
I am French, and I know not a little bit about French companies. Alsthom is the former name of Alstom. See fr:Alstom. The company has been created by a merging in 1928. Between the company Société ALSascienne de constructions mécaniques (=mecanical engineering ALSatian company) and Thomson-Houston, a US company. Alsatian is for the French region of Alsace around Strasbourg. But this name of ALSTHOM was not convenient for foreign purposes and it has been changed to ALSTOM ...in 1998, seventy years after. --Tangopaso (talk) 18:45, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

I can not find any source claiming this.

In June 2014 Siemens and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries announced their formation of joint ventures to bid for Alstom's troubled energy and transportation businesses (in locomotives, steam turbines, and aircraft engines). A rival bid by General Electric (GE) has been criticized by French government sources, who consider Alstom's operations as a "vital national interest" at a moment when the French unemployment level stands above 10% and some voters are turning towards the far-right.[1][2][3]
  • Nowhere is Alstom's energy and transportation businesses described as "troubled"
  • Alstom doesn't make aircraft engines.
  • The reference to Marie Le Pen appears to be synthesis - Alstom is not mentioned in the article. Please do original political comment elsewhere. This appears to be an example of Wikipedia:Coatrack Prof.Haddock (talk) 07:40, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
I had wondered about that myself. A lot of the text appears to have been lifted from newspaper articles which use emotive rhetoric, it's something Wikipedia editors should avoid. TrainsOnTime (talk) 17:52, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
