The Rose of Allendale
[edit]I suppose that this is the Allendale mentioned in the song. Am I right ? -- Derek Ross | Talk 03:03, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
- Absolutely. --Maarten1963 (talk) 17:09, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
Unfortunately, 'The Rose of Allandale', a Scottish folk song, probably refers to a ship, and it does not refer to Allendale Town. There is, after all, a small but salient clue in the spelling. - The wiki page for the song states it is Allendale, Northumberland. However, there is a town called Allandale in Falkirk, Scotland. Considering the song's writer also wrote a song called "Mary of Argyle", it might be reasonable to assume it is about a girl. However, I'd suggest it is also pretty certain that it is not an irish song, despite the list of Irish artists mentioned on the main page. he writer was English. Requested move 29 January 2019
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: no consensus to move the page to the proposed title at this time, per the discussion below. Dekimasuよ! 19:47, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
Allendale, Northumberland → Allendale Town – This is the name of the village even though the parish is just "Allendale", the new title also avoids the need to disambiguate it per WP:NATURAL. Crouch, Swale (talk) 20:47, 29 January 2019 (UTC) --Relisting. SITH (talk) 12:11, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose, unless there's evidence that "Allendale Town" has some sort of common usage and isn't just a name on a map. A Google news search suggests that this isn't the case, while local signposts simply say "Allendale" [1][2]. PC78 (talk) 16:25, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
- Sources such as [3][4][5]. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:29, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
- That shows usage, but does it demonstrate common usage? The text of that pdf seems to use "Allendale Town" and "Allendale" interchangeably without making any distinction. PC78 (talk) 20:36, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
- Well a Google search for Allendale Northumberland does show 4 pages on the first set of results, the Visit Northumberland is first and that calls it "Allendale Town" in the title but then refers to it as "Allendale". The search also brings up the Google Map with it as "Allendale Town". But other places are frequently shortened such as Newcastle upon Tyne, Kingston upon Hull and Bury St Edmunds. It could well be the case here. Crouch, Swale (talk) 20:47, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

- A separate article about the town would probably be Allendale Town, but this is about both the town and the parish so would a name that can refer to both be better? Peter James (talk) 13:59, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
- We presumably don't need separate articles for both since as noted "Allendale Town" and "Allendale" appear to be used interchangeably (see Commons:Category talk:Llangelynin). Unlike Commons we probably shouldn't make a distinction between village and parish. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:12, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
