The Clapper
[edit]- "While there he filed his first patent application for a sound activated switch, used to turn on and off lights and appliances with the clap of the hands."
This is almost certainly a joke not-so-subtly referring to The Clapper, but I can't confirm that he didn't make any similar invention.
I went ahead and removed the statement. The likelihood that it is not bogus is incredibly low.
Du Mont's name
[edit]The Reason article cited in the external links notes that his name was actually Du Mont, not DuMont. Should the article name be changed? — Dale Arnett 03:44, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
- There's a redirect from "du Mont" to this article. The spellings are fairly balanced between the two on Google, with "duMont" slightly favored. It looks like leaving it this way should be okay, but it was an excellent question. —BozoTheScary 02:46, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
Don Du Mont's presidential runs
[edit]There's some evidence (a google books search) that a Don Du Mont ran for president in 1952. The same one, I wonder? Шизомби (talk) 21:17, 30 July 2008 (UTC) Just came across this diff edit summary:"remove irrelevant oneforthetable.com material added by an editor with a WP:COI" While I grant you I should have added a better source (e.g. Kilian, Michael (September 21, 1976). "A Memory of DuMont, an also-ran's also-ran". Chicago Tribune. p. B2., which mentions both brothers, both RPI graduates), I don't think I had a conflict of interest in adding it diff. Possibly this editor was meant?: diff? Not sure what the COI was there either. Шизомби (Sz) (talk) 18:09, 7 January 2010 (UTC)
Television
[edit]I added 'commercially-viable' to 'DuMont's invention of the first long-lasting cathode ray tube would later make commercially-viable television possible' (this matches the phrase used on 'Did you know...' on 14 December 2010). Inventions which made TV possible started to be made in the 19th century. PhilUK (talk) 19:15, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
- It would be interesting to know what those first 1938 and 1939 televisons sold for. I remember the network, Jackie Gleason was the big star they had. I vaguely remember DuMont televisons.1archie99 (talk) 21:20, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
