Hmm, maybe merge the legal definition and the illegal immigrant part?

And who's David Keyhoe? I guess I go follow that link now :)

Maybe. If that's better, do so! Local usage in USA is beyond my horizon. It's not standard, at least no good standard, in those parts of the world I know anything about. :-> -- Ruhrjung 13:21 May 3, 2003 (UTC)

What the writer is describing is named "Anthropocentrism" (the worldview of mankind as the centre of the universe), not "ethnocentricity".

Answers in Genesis

[edit]

Is the link to the Answers In Genesis really relevant to this page? Just looking for comments before doing anything. -SocratesJedi | Talk 05:21, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

It's spam - the same user (216.252.92.100 (talk · contribs)) crammed links to his site into several articles. -- John Fader (talk · contribs) 12:31, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I made it disambig

[edit]

I made this page into a disambiguation page, creating Alien (biology), Alien (law), Alien (computing), and Extraterrestrial life in popular culture. There are a frightening number of links to the straight Alien page.

Where am I supposed to link bog standard monsters-from-outa-space references? Extraterrestrial life reads like a SETI page and Extraterrestrial life in popular culture is little better than a stub. --zippedmartin 03:47, 12 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

On a related note, there is an aliens disambig page as well, which seems a little redundant. I'd like to merge that content with this page and have aliens redirect here. Any objections or comments? Vanished user 1029384756 15:55, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I figured I'd just be bold and do it, so it's done. Feel free to discuss any concerns. Vanished user 1029384756 18:52, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Aliens deserved a redirect :) I am actually resolving some links, most of the time I make them point to Extraterrestrial life in popular culture. Hashar 14:51, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies to Jiy

[edit]

Sorry for reverting your edit; I didn't look closely enough and thought you were making the mistake I've seen a lot of people make, piping the target page of a disambig line so people don't see the actual title of the article being linked to. My bad! -- Antaeus Feldspar 14:48, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Odd Changes

[edit]

Whatever happened to alien 3 and alien resurrection? (or should there be a separate series page for that? --Dch111 04:44, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wondered about that, too. It looks like user Fritz wanted it to be very strict and limited to the words 'alien' and 'aliens' only. I'm not sure I agree with the severe edits, but Fritz has many contributions so I will accept that the edits were valid. Wikipeon 15:04, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Also, there is a film series box on both the Alien and Aliens pages, so users will be able to find the other films in the Alien franchise from those boxes. Wikipeon 15:10, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I added the Alien 3 and 4 movies on the page, and just realised they had previously been removed. I'll leave them on for now until someone removes them. However if I was looking up these movies and didn't know their exact names, I'd search for the term Alien first (ie and get this page for the correct name). Gazjo 04:58, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I removed links to the articles List of extraterrestrials in fiction and List of alien films as this is a disambiguation page and those lists refer to one meaning of alien. The appropriate place for those links would be the article Extraterrestrial life in popular culture. -Acjelen 22:40, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

IP edit block

[edit]

Is it possible for someone to lock this article? I've seen that block take effect on another article, can't remember which one. But the point is whenever I come to this article, both the article and discussion is usually vandalised/ill-used by people who don't have accounts. So I highly recommend this. Who agrees? -- Harish - 04:41, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Slight reformat

[edit]

I hope nobody minds that I did just a little reformatting on the first section. Most of the page looks so good, but the first section was a little messier. Following the guidelines on the WP disambiguation pages, I trimmed to one link per entry, put it at the beginning of the entry, reduced descriptions, and took off the closing punctuation. --AnnaFrance (talk) 00:33, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Aliens redirect

[edit]

I KNOW that Aliens should probably redirect to Aliens (film). I will post this on the talk page for the other article as well in order to see all opinions. Mynameisnotpj (talk) 02:12, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think there are too many things associated with the term "Alien", and we cannot guarantee that the average reader typing in "Aliens" isn't looking for the "real thing" (just in pluralized form), and not the film. There wouldn't be a point to redirecting "Aliens" to the film page, you might as well rename the article altogether.  BIGNOLE  (Contact me) 02:21, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it is fine as it is. Anyone looking for the film can find it almost instantly on this page, anyone looking for something else could, potentially, get confused. Not the ideal outcome for disambiguation. As it stands aliens film does redirect there which will catch most people searching for the film. (Emperor (talk) 00:36, 13 May 2008 (UTC))[reply]
I agree that we should not do a redirect. I have been fixing the pages that link to this dab page and can verify the point that at least as many wikilinks are looking for something other than the film series. --AnnaFrance (talk) 14:46, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

I just removed 3 entries whose only relevant link was red. In case anyone disagrees with any part of this, here are the removed entries:

--AnnaFrance (talk) 14:50, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I did this because Extraterrestrial life in popular culture is just a redirect to Fictional extraterrestrials. Also, it didn't seem to belong in the Science and Engineering section, so I moved it to Film and Television.

If I have made a mistake with any of this, just change it back. --AnnaFrance (talk) 04:03, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Aliens

[edit]

The word Alien, in a scientific definition, means Life on another celestial body, Therefore “Aliens” do exist. However the common definition (non scientific) is a humanoid being on another planet. There is no proof of “Aliens” if that is your definition, although they probably do exist because the universe is ever expanding; and there is so much we haven’t explored. I believe aliens do exist because we have proof that there is plant life on celestial bodies in our and other solar systems. Doctor Michael Mississippi (talk) 22:07, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have a theory about aliens. I have heard that there are good and bad aliens. The sound that scientists have been hearing could be good aliens warning humans that bad aliens are coming to earth. Requested additions to the page - ALiEN Dance Crew and Music Group (both dance and vocal songs.)

[edit]

There is a dance crew called ALiEN, based in South Korea, who have several (literally world) renowned choreography sequences and are quite frequently consulted and hired to produce choreography ranging from AAA american artists to kpop and jpop idol groups.

ALiEN - Destroy the System - this song should be added to the list of songs, they have other songs also - but I have only recently discovered them myself and was searching for their wikipedia page so as to better understand them (surprise, they don't have one because this is protected and most people don't want to bother going through the hassle of changing something like this.)

You can find all their pages quite easily.

ALiEN seem to be quite small with their online presence (their youtube channel having less than a million subscribers), but they are /huge/ in the global dance scene and they themselves are covered quite often by smaller dance crews abroad. If you talk to someone in a dance crew, if they haven't heard of ALiEN before, the crew is probably not a very good one.

They definitely deserve a place on wikipedia, even if just for their musical works. It's bothered me for a long time that wikipedia seems to be elitist and often neglects smaller artists and in some cases outright deleting their artist pages (every time they get made) until someone arbitrarily decides they've gained enough fame or fandom to warrant a page. Wikipedia is supposed to be a library of all human knowledge, if I search for something I should be able to find it- isn't that the whole point? Why would you not allow a group to have a place? Evidently people are searching for them or I wouldn't be here typing this nor would I have made an account.

AlienAlien (disambiguation)
Alien → primary redirect to Extraterrestrial life
Aliens → primary redirect to Extraterrestrial life – The word "alien" and "aliens" are clearly most commonly used to refer to extraterrestrial life. While the legal term is certainly the second most common usage, the former far supercedes it. Furthermore, while many legal documents and texts use the word "alien" in a legal context, the terms "foreign national", "foreigner", "noncitizen", etc., are more commonly used in general. However, a simple search of both pageview statistics and Google ngrams strongly suggests that the term is most commonly used to refer to extraterrestrial life. Bneu2013 (talk) 04:02, 2 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

As for the ngrams, "Alien" and "Aliens" are both monograms so I am not sure what you are comparing them to, or know in what sense they are being used. My comparison with "extraterrestrial life" shows that usage for "alien" and "aliens" peaked in the late 1940s, and that for "extraterrestrial life" grew in the 1960s, when "alien(s)" slumped].
It's not just in law, e.g. the classic book How to be an Alien was written before the space race made extraterrestrial life an extremely popular topic.
It's irrelevant whether other terms such as "Foreigner" are more common: that's an argument for Alien (law) being the primary topic for the word "foreigner", not an argument that Extraterrestrial life is the primary topic for the words "alien" and "aliens". I note we haven't Extraterrestrial lives. 85.67.32.244 (talk) 06:43, 2 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Comment - I will add that the films make use entirely of the extraterrestrial definition of "alien", and have nothing to do with the legal/foreigner definition. This seems to further solidify the extraterrestrial definition as the primary topic; pageviews are not the sole determinant of this. But here's another way of looking at it: If someone asks the question "Do aliens exist?", do you think many people would respond with "Of course they do, everyone is an alien except for in their country of residence" or "Yes, its one of the best sci-fi action films ever"?. Bneu2013 (talk) 07:24, 2 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That's a question of context and, in your second example, grammar: "is Aliens worth watching?" is a different question from "Are aliens worth watching?"; "if discovered, would an alien have the same rights as an American citizen?" may be more ambiguous. I think the fact that the disambiguation page gets far fewer views than at least three entries on its page – I'm taking Occam's Razor not to check every entry – shows that there isn't a primary topic, really. (And please don't mix the legal concepts of residence and citizenship, it's why the U.S. and other countries distinguish resident aliens, for example.) 85.67.32.244 (talk) 08:06, 2 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
