The Vail Point of View
[edit]The Internet Archive has a volume titled "Early history of the electro-magnetic telegraph from letters and journals of Alfred Vail" published in 1914 by his son James Cummings Vail which may interest those editing this Wikipedia.org page. It largely consists of extracts from the Vail records in the Smithsonian. It presents the Vail perspective on the telegraph issue. Its Preface states: "It is not claimed that Vail invented the telegraph, but this work shows Morse invented 'A System of Telegraphs,' not 'The Telegraph'."
On the Morse Code issue, on its last page (p36), the book's author notes: "I find nothing in Vail's writings to show that either he or Morse claimed the Alphabet, which was not claimed in the original caveat."
Incidentally, the photo of Vail on the Wikipedia page:
- is a flipped version of the one in the above-mentioned Vail book (which of the two is the correct way round I have no idea!)
- comes from a source URL that no longer exists (it can, however, be found on the same website at "http://www.morrisparks.net/speedwell/Vail/Av1a300.GIF")

External links modified
[edit]Hello fellow Wikipedians,
I have just added archive links to one external link on Alfred Vail. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}}

- Added archive https://web.archive.org/20050321094151/http://parks.morris.nj.us:80/speedwell/tel/tel.html to http://www.parks.morris.nj.us/speedwell/tel/tel.html
When you have finished reviewing my changes, please set the checked parameter below to true to let others know.
