Rewrite, Please!

I've just read this article, and I'm still in the dark. Who was Alfred Sandover? Was he a footballer? If he was, who did he play for? What was the "contract" about? What is Sandover's connection to the fire in the William Sandover & Co. building in 1907? Why was he awarded a M.B.E.? There are some jolly big gaps in this page, and I guess it makes perfect sense to the people who already know the history, but I don't. Please enlighten me.
