Rank?

[edit]

Is there such a thing as a Lieutenant General of a regiment? I think not, but am always open to surprises. Is "lieutenant colonel" meant? M. le Quatretildes Terry J. Carter 98.148.73.179 (talk) 18:34, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

He was Lieutenant General (i.e. Lieutenant-Governor); he was not in direct command of the regiment. I have made changes accordingly. Creuzbourg (talk) 13:28, 2 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Brutal War?

[edit]

The article describes de Prouville as engaging in a 'brutal war' against the Iroquois, without any citation to verify. The article on de Prouville on the Canadian Biography Online[1] makes no mention of incidents that seem 'brutal' as judged by the standards of the time (burning crops & deserted villages was pretty tame for for the 1600s. So where does this allegation of brutality come from? Corlyon (talk) 04:32, 28 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the unsourced word 'brutal'. Creuzbourg (talk) 13:29, 2 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed

[edit]

The information in the paragraph about Tracy's campaign against the Iroquois contains numerous factual errors as it is based on an inaccurate, outdated (and biased) source. There were three expeditions organized against the Mohawk in 1666. The first, in February 1666, failed because the soldiers of the Régiment de Carignan-Salières were ill-equipped to campaign during the Canadian winter. The second, in August 1666, turned back when they met a Mohawk delegation returning French captives to New France. The third, in October 1666, did not directly engage the Mohawk but did destroy their villages and crops. Tracy did not force the Mohawk to covert to Catholicism or adopt the French language. Extensive revision is needed using reliable sources such as Eccles's Canada under Louis XIV and Verney's The Good Regiment. Griffin's Sword (talk) 19:36, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
