What happened to Archbishop Trench?
[edit]It was always my understanding that Alexandra College was co-founded by two people - the aforesaid Anne Jellicoe, and the then Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Richard Chenevix Trench. I see no mention of him either in this Wikipedia entry or on Alexandra College's web site. I understand that the school wishes to encourage diversity and tolerance, and having such an unequivocal Church of Ireland origin may be a bit of an embarrassment. Much better, maybe, to have been founded by a Quaker, and a female one to boot. However, the following is quoted, with due acknowledgement, from the Church of Ireland Notes column in the Irish Times. It is not specific about Dr Trench's exact role in the school's foundation, but would seem to confirm that he had one:
Trench, although Irish by birth, came to Dublin from the Deanery of Westminster, where he had established a reputation as an important theological writer and his books on the parables and on the miracles were best sellers in their day. He was also a well regarded poet and an important philologist who was co-founder of the Oxford English Dictionary. In Ireland he is best remembered as a staunch supporter of the Church of Ireland at disestablishment, an important voice in the liturgical and doctrinal debates after disestablishment, and an influential figure in the foundation of Alexandra College.
