Name of page

Can we change the name of the page to Alex Zverev or Sascha Zverev to avoid having parentheses in the title, and still avoid confusion with his father? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sportsfan77777 (talkcontribs) 06:29, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Great idea, @Sportsfan77777:. As you can see, the article is now entitled Sascha Zverev. Should the Alexander Zverev page be merged to Alexander Zverev, Sr., to further differentiate between the two?
The problem is that he plays as Alexander Zverev and is credited under that name by the ATP - see http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/players/alexander-zverev/z355/overview. All the reporting about him refers to him as Alexander - a quick Google search for "Alex Zverev", for example, turns up mostly results that call him Alexander. Unfortunately I think people will be searching for him under the name Alexander Zverev rather than Alex or Sascha, especially if they're not particularly familiar with his nicknames. Parentheses seem like a necessary evil in the circumstances. lone_twin (talk) 08:56, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

^Yes, I agree with naming the page "Alexander Zverev Jr." for those reasons. I was a bit confused why that wasn't the original name of the page, but I'm glad it's been sorted out. Sportsfan77777 (talk) 04:49, 17 May 2016 (UTC)

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on Alexander Zverev (tennis player, born 1997). Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether. Zverev Junior?

Are we going to add Sr. and Jr. to the Alexander Zverevs' respective biographies? Rovingrobert (talk) 08:00, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

Alexander Zverev Jr.Alexander Zverev – Now he won the Rome Masters, he is the most prominent person by his name, ahead of his father and the Paralympic athlete. The ATP does not include Jr. in his name [1]. Either do major news media, e.g., [2][3][4]. The current disambiguation article Alexander Zverev can be moved to Alexander Zverev (disambiguation), which already exists as a redirect. As a sidenote, tomorrow, a new argument for this move can likely be added, since he is projected to be ranked in the top 10 by then. Gap9551 (talk) 16:33, 21 May 2017 (UTC) --Relisting. EdJohnston (talk) 23:41, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

Agree. OTOH, as a side note he is just barely not a teenager now, so he is still very young (junior pro, if you wish :))). So the Jr. part fits him well, for now. Naki (talk) 19:38, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
  • Keep as is My first thoughts are that we keep this as is since it is far too early to go moving articles based on winning the Italian Open. I feel it is far better to keep Alexander Zverev as a disambiguation page for all 3 notable sports figures. We should also note that the International Tennis Federation uses just "Alexander Zverev" for his father. And news arganizations vary in their use as we see at Bleacher Report, Sports Rush, the Mirror, etc. Precision is also quite important in titles. With so many intricate facts we throw out with our editing I think keeping jr and sr as distinct could help. If we do anything in the future I would recommend we keep him at "Alexander Zverev Jr" and make Alexander Zverev redirect to him... and then create a new "Alexander Zverev (disambiguation)" article. But now is not the time imho. I'm not set in stone on this... just an opinion. Fyunck(click) (talk) 05:18, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Laver Cup

Does the Zverev page need an introduction / explination of Laver Cup as a tournament? seems unnecessary and redundant to me. --LH7605 (talk) 12:42, 24 September 2019 (UTC)

I don't see where it does that. Fyunck(click) (talk) 19:30, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
has been already changed, it was in this version. but as it already has been changed, discussion can be deleated. --LH7605 (talk) 20:50, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
Looks like someone added it again... I removed it. Fyunck(click) (talk) 09:15, 25 September 2019 (UTC)

2019: Struggles during the season

I am wondering whether it is fair to headline Zverev's 2019 season with the expression "struggles". It is true that he hasn't had his best year, but on the other hand he never went further in the Australian Open and the US Open than in 2019. Besides that, he equalised his best French Open result by reaching the quarterfinals in 2019. As he is on the verge of requalifying for the ATP Tour Final, I think we should rephrase the summary of his 2019 season by taking the normal ups&downs of a 22 year old player into account.Opinions? --LH7605 (talk) 16:33, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

Agreed, so I changed it to Ups and downs. Fyunck(click) (talk) 19:50, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

So somebody changed it to "2nd major quarterfinal & masters runner-up", which is again not completly true as it is too positive. I am going to change it back.--LH7605 (talk) 08:29, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

Inital review

Lead

  • WP:OVERLINK discourages linking things like nations that have little relevance to the article. I would say Germany in the opening sentence is a prime example of that.
  • won one Junior Grand Slam singles title at the 2014 Australian Open, if that's his only junior title  perhaps a junior Grand Slam would be more appropriate? It also avoids it sounding like there was more than one title at the Australian Open.

Early life

  • I enjoy it still, I enjoyed it back then. So, yeah – that’s how I started playing, are these last two sentences of the quote necessary? They don't seem to add any further and the last is basically repeating the opening sentence of the paragraph.
  • as a kid, a little informal. As a child perhaps?

References

  • Some of these refs appear to be repeated (1 and 4, 2 and 3). Merge into single citations and use the ref name to repeat rather than reposting them.
  • Refs 2 and 3 need accessdates.
  • I must say I'm surprised at the amount of information missing from the refs. Very few have publication dates or authors listed, is there a reason?
    • I added all of the dates, and some of the authors. Most of the sources (in particular, all of the ATP Tour refs) don't have specific authors. Sportsfan77777 (talk) 07:09, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
      • That's fine, I noticed one or two authors missing so just assumed there would be a few more. If they don't have them there's nothing you can do. Kosack (talk) 20:07, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

A big article, well detailed and very well written. Not much I can really find to concern me. Placed on hold for now. Kosack (talk) 14:20, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the review, Kosack! I addressed everything above and also updated the 2019 sections. Sportsfan77777 (talk) 07:20, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

Follow up

  • In the first paragraph of the 2016 section, it states his victory over Cilic was the highest ranked opponent he had ever defeated. However, in the final paragraph of 2015 it says he defeated no. 1 Djokovic at the Boodles Challenge exhibition?

@Sportsfan77777: I think that's it from me. One final issue above and I'm happy to approve this. Kosack (talk) 20:25, 2 May 2019 (UTC)

@Kosack: Yay! I answered above. Sportsfan77777 (talk) 21:16, 2 May 2019 (UTC)
Happy to promote this. Well written, comprehensive and suitably sourced. Scores a little high on the copyvio detector but there are several sizeable quotes that account for the majority of this. Promoting. Kosack (talk) 06:17, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

Why Russian transliteration

There is no need for that because Zverev was born in Germany and his nationality is German, too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arndt1969 (talkcontribs) 07:43, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

I actually agree. No reason for it. Fyunck(click) (talk) 07:50, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
Zverev is a Russian, not a German. He's not popular in Germany. --87.78.101.244 (talk) 01:37, 14 September 2020 (UTC)
Yeah.... no. Fyunck(click) (talk) 05:31, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

It is there again, I erase it. Not important for a German born German citizen.

His entire behavior at the Olympic Games, as well as the statement that he is proud to play for Germany, shows that he clearly feels himself German. His parents may be Russian, but what does that have to do with his name?

Could you stop inserting his fictive Russian name and transliteration — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arndt1969 (talkcontribs) 16:06, 11 July 2022 (UTC)

Semi-protected edit request on 14 September 2020

Alex Zverev's coach is not Dominic Thiem, it's David Ferrer Chriyang (talk) 05:00, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

 Done Fyunck(click) (talk) 05:31, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

I would recommend that a member adds a bit more detail though on the US Open loss, as "he became the runner-up to Dominic Thiem" hardly tells the story. You don't need to make him out to be a choker or anything because he isn't, and even if he had done it would run the risk of editorialising and/or being overly critical, but there should be mention of his two set and a break lead and the fact he served for the title in the fifth set.
