It's clear from reading this and numerous related discussions that there are problems with current consensus. Consensus can and does change. It's clear that Belfast, Ireland is as unacceptable to Unionist editors as Cork, United Kingdom would be to Nationalist editors, as Unionist editors evidently associate Ireland with the current Republic of Ireland state. As I've suggested on the discussion page [1] a tweak to Belfast, Island of Ireland might be better. Valenciano (talk) 18:41, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Even a seemingly Unionist editor said during the discussion - "I know there has been changes but I think it's the best way of doing it and has the benefit of being factually correct as well with few reasons to oppose it from a political motivation perspective". Belfast UK pre 1921 is obviously not going to achieve consensus, I'm just interested to see if Island of Ireland would be more acceptable to unionist thinking editors than simply ireland. If not the status quo seems fine. Valenciano (talk) 23:37, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've no objection to the discussion being re-opened (properly, not in the archive). As you can see from the original discussion, it started over the use of [[United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland|Ireland]] generally by Unionist editors, which everyone agreed was inconsistent due to England, Scotland and Wales all linking to the actual place. Therefore if there was no problem with simply "Ireland" appearing in the article back then, I don't really see why there should be now. But open up the discussion if you want.... I just noticed that I wrongly put it in the archive. I've no problem with the current consensus, though I think Island of Ireland would be a better solution. I've bigger fish to fry with the Spanish election results coming in so Iļl leave it to to TU et al to reopen that and comment if that happens. Valenciano (talk) 23:54, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
