Thanks for bringing this up. After doing some more research, it looks like he was indeed born in Chernivtsi, Ukraine SSR, per the JRCC and other sources. The JRCC no longer lists Leningrad, and it has long been updated to reflect the correct information. This is also in Wikidata, the Hebrew and Romanian Wikipedia, and various others. A better source for nationality and birthplace to consider using

[edit]

Today the Globe and Mail published an investigative story on Alex Snaider's birthplace, narratively framed through the story of presenting as Russian-Canadian for the two decades prior, but seeing the need to correct the record now. I think it's a better reference to use because:

  • It includes material describing the Globe's verification of his place of birth by visiting the records office in Chernivtsi, viewing originals, and speaking with staff
  • It is a reliable secondary source (investigative reporting by a highly-regarded Canadian newspaper)
  • It further contains context for the change now, and the history of his birthplace previously being given as St. Petersburg, which is notable enough that it may deserve being covered in the article
  • As a bonus, it even contains biographical and business history that are public but may be poorly documented or only available in primary sources requiring original research. As a reference, it would become useful for more citations in the article than only the citation of his birthplace.

The one mark against it as a source is that it's behind a paywall. A second version of the article is published as a mobile-friendly "reader" version that seems to contain the same text without a paywall: https://globe2go.pressreader.com/article/281479281179466
