This article talks about the pump's "current location". Exactly where might that current location be? Nzseries1 (talk) 15:46, 24 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Epidemic?

[edit]

Is there any high quality source that discusses evidence for an epidemic associated with Aldgate pump? I see a lot of internet stuff asserting it, but it is all very recent and they use suspiciously similar turns of phrase. I've had a poke about in the contemporaneous historical record and I see nothing that talks about an outbreak of disease specifically associated with the Aldgate water. There are some mentions of a study having been made of the water in about 1874, and it having been found to be contaminated, but nothing suggests there was a higher than usual incidence of illness. Is the "epidemic" a real historical event, or something that the internet has spun from fragments? Pyrope 08:00, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's a myth, I think. [This article](https://www.london-walking-tours.co.uk/secret-london/the-aldgate-pump.htm) has a pretty good takedown 81.2.83.94 (talk) 11:03, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Bearing all that in mind, and with a few subsequent searches also not turning up anything compelling, I think I'll be bold and remove that information. There might be some worry about it being sourced, but I think that would be a good starting point for a discussion on WP:RS for this sort of internet rumour. Pyrope 12:23, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think it needs some information in the wiki saying, there is a "unsubstantiated rumour" 203.221.48.51 (talk) 09:22, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
