Aldabra tortoises mating
[edit]I saw a pair of these animals breeding at the Oakland Zoo on Sunday, October 21, 2007. You never saw such a crowd of mesmerized, fascinated, and horrified zoogoers. Let's just say that the male gets very vocal in a way I would not have thought physiologically possible. I just hope I can get this memory out of my mind someday. Zanzibar population
[edit]Naturally occuring or the result of human intervention? This is a useful point that should be addressed in the article.--Wetman (talk) 13:09, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
Genus
[edit]At the Cape May Zoo, the signs refer to this tortoise as Geochelone gigatea, which contradicts this article and Geochelone. Does the zoo have old or incorrect information, or does Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.94.61.91 (talk) 20:45, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
- The zoo is out of date but Wikipedia possibly is also. According to turtles working group (http://www.iucn-tftsg.org/wp-content/uploads/file/Accounts/crm_5_000_checklist_v3_2010.pdf) dec 2010, page 000.116 it can be one of two, the article does not explain it or the previous naming. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 21:13, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
- The overwhelmingly large genus Geochelone was split up over a decade ago and this is now followed. The checklist when looking for justification does require you to have all versions to follow it along, the 2007 version discusses Geochelone the 2008 and 2009 versions discuss the reasons for using Aldabrachelys over Dipsochelys and the most recent 2010 version just refers to their old discussions in previous versions. Under the rules of the ICZN the valid name is Aldabrachelys (prevailing usage) until a decision is made by the ICZN regarding the current case over this species. Cheers. Proposed Merge
[edit]I am proposing that in light of the recent ICZN decision and a stable name in place now that we bring all these articles on the Aldabran Tortoise under one article. Namely this one. I will put merge tags in the other articles. Comment anyone? Faendalimas talk 01:58, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
- Just to make it all clear. I want to merge some of the information into the various species level accounts for the members of the genus Aldabrachelys and the rest into the genus account, leaving the page Dipsochelys as a redirect only. Cheers. Faendalimas talk 14:42, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
- I have combined all the subspecies under the one pae and corrected the nomenclature to be in line with the ICZN decision. This article does still need cross checking and some references that had previously been used but not linked are difficult to sort. Cheers Faendalimas talk 20:44, 15 June 2014 (UTC)
Αυτή η χελώνα είναι καταπληκτική! Δεν υπάρχει!!! Πραγματικά!!!!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.107.219.224 (talk) 16:56, 17 February 2014 (UTC)
La Digue population
[edit]I am rather surprised that while listing such small introductions such as to Zanzibar, there is no mention whatsoever of the significant population of the Aldabra sp on La Digue, the 3rd largest island in Seychelles. It is the most readily visible population on the Seychelles as far as visitors go. Ptilinopus (talk) 23:13, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
Uses
[edit]If European sailors exterminated them, they were presumably used for something as they don't appear to be dangerous. Are they used for food? Tortoise shell?Bill (talk) 00:42, 10 January 2020 (UTC)
