Original for Trollope's Augustus Melmotte?
[edit]Is there any evidence for the possibility he may have been an inspiration for the character of Augustus Melmotte in Trollope's "The Way We Live Now" (first published 1875 after Grant was unseated from Parliament at Kidderminster)? Characteristics Grant markedly shared with Melmotte included being Jewish, an allegedly fraudulent promoter as early as his first election to parliament, politically Conservative, and railways being among his interests. (Main difference is that Trollope makes Melmotte commit suicide.)Cloptonson (talk) 20:41, 25 December 2015 (UTC)
