I created the article
[edit]This article is about Alberni Channel, a canal in Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. It's about a place that exists and appears at the maps, just that I haven't found any source to prove it yet. But if you search at www.google.com, you can find it "informal" proves of its existence. Onofre Bouvila 04:03, 12 May 2007 (UTC)
Move/rename proposal
[edit]Move/rename - the title needs capitalization, to a capital-C "Alberni Canal", to Wiki standard. This is the proper name of the inlet, and appears on most maps I've seen that way; it's a post-Spanish legacy, like a few others (Burrard Inlet was Burrard's Canal early on...), ditto Portland Canal though not named for a Spaniard; Dean Channel vs Gardner Canal come to mind. But anyway, this is fine as part of a series on significant inlets and sounds on the British Columbia Coast (q.v.) and could include things on its ecology, other ecological issues, the Sarita tsunami (c.1700 I think), oceanography, industry, other communities than Port Alberni and Sarita (there's only a few); I guess Bamfield's more Barclay Sound (which for BC project people I should suggest would make a great FA proposal/project, ditto with Clayoquot Sound; not that any of us have time....). I thought about including a dash of First Nations history, concerning hostilities between the Tseshaht and Pacheedaht, and I think the Ucluelets were Wickanninish's people (if there's not an article on him yet that's one for the "BC aboriginal articles to-do list"); this is ultimately a geographic article so all history should just be basic. Not bad for a starter; I'll be removing the commeric\\cial link, placed innocently enough by Onofre Bouvila; the RD and town or IR/FN websites might be better, maybe a googlemap satshot (gonna get one for the Okanagan Mountain Fire that's pretty cool...) and any MDS studies (MoE).Skookum1 (talk)
- I'm working through various bays and inlets up the coast and got here -- the maps I have all says Alberni Inlet, and BCGNIS says Alberni Inlet replaced the old name Alberni Canal in 1945, with whatever authority the BCGNIS people have. Just a comment -- I don't know much about it. Also, at first glance the one map on the page makes it look like it is in Alaska... until you realize its a tsunami map and not really about Alberni Inlet/Canal... I'll make a location map if I get to it... working on such things. Pfly (talk) 15:48, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
- re maps; one showing the tsunami is great enough if it were a local-region map, showing how the tsunami refracted back up the inlet, and also showing other places that were damaged (Sarita, as noted previously).Skookum1 (talk) 20:32, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
- 'Move/rename update I've always thought of it as Alberni Canal, a usage which continues on today in the vernacular even though the official name was changed in 1945. here's the BCGNIS account. Guess the name change has to be to Alberni Inlet, as that's now the official name; recent-era cites of the "Canal" usage abound and should be mentioned if/when found/demonstrated.Skookum1 (talk) 16:45, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
Whoops, I just made an edit to the name change info... but now I realize what's really needed is a page move/rename. Ah well, should probably just do it. Pfly (talk) 04:21, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
- I just tried that and don't know how to get past the problem that Alberni Inlet already exists, i.e. the current redirect; says to ask an admin for help with the move; anyone here qualify?Skookum1 (talk) 16:25, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
- I moved the article over the stuck redirect, and updated the name throughout the article. --Seattle Skier (talk) 19:46, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
Name change info
[edit]Re Bobanny's addition of the 1931 letter...interesting. The same logic wasn't applied to the Portland Canal, though Anyox was a going concern (but not a port for other aras, as P.A. could be for nearby Mid-Island towns. The Gardner Canal, into Kitimat/Terrace, was not yet a going concern as a shipping lane and wouldn't be until Kitimat was built. Washington's Hood Canal was similarly spared a similar name change.Skookum1 (talk) 20:30, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
