Well, this is an interesting piece of unsourced folklore from user:24.99.195.199:
"PACK" (P.A.C.K.) is the acronym for "Pneumatic Air Cycle Kit", which includes the ACM, heat exchangers, water separators, pressure regulating mechanisms, etc.
The original B707 had a non-pneumatic vapor cycle "pack," and so did the Lockheed L-188A. You can look up their 1950's era operating manuals and control panels and can clearly see their non-pneumatic cooling systems referred to as "packs", so I can't see how the supposed acronym above could be true.
