I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Timeline of the 2011 Bahraini uprising's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 10:34, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Neutrality and reference banners

[edit]

I added these banners as many of the reflinks in the text were bot tagged as: "what are credentials of this site? site in arabic. from limited english provided on linked page, site appear to be user-generated. also, appears to be a dynamic page resulting in a dead link" -- these are really invalid, IMO. As far as neutrality, any text this long about such a provocative issue must be monitored for the unavoidable POV that will inevitably leach or seep into the narrative. Sorry if there were any misunderstandings! Rms125a@hotmail.com (talk) 11:36, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think those tags are entirely reasonable. Thank you for drawing attention to the problematic refs in particular. I haven't had an opportunity to check these out individually (most of this timeline I simply split off from the main article and reformatted as necessary), but it looks as though a lot of them need to be scrapped and replaced if possible. Unfortunately, I have zero reading comprehension of Arabic, and unavoidably some of this information is going to be in Arabic-language sources only. If somebody who can read Arabic could help out with vetting these references, that would be really great. Cheers. -Kudzu1 (talk) 16:03, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Please see WP:NPOV dispute. The NPOV dispute tag does not mean that the article "must be monitored" for POV - all articles should be monitored for POV. The tag means that there is an ongoing dispute - with concrete editorial issues - that editors have not yet resolved on the talk page and with their edits.
So i am removing the tag. Anyone wishing to monitor the article for POV is most welcome to. Those people regularly monitoring and editing the article will need to try to retain NPOV. Boud (talk) 21:59, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

... also, it lasted until 17 June 2011 when the story was pulled [1]. Was POV overlooked at the original selection?--ML5 (talk) 11:35, 17 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Useful website

[edit]

This website has an archive of daily news from many websites about the uprising. Bahraini Activist (talk) 15:29, 26 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

While that website may be of help, readers must also bear in mind that it is an opposition website and therefore inherently biased against the regime. A simple [Google news search for “Bahrain”] would give a more balanced picture. AKhani84 (talk) 15:28, 27 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, talk pages are for editors, not normal readers and searching for just "Bahrain" won't get you specific results. I'm just leaving it here so that if some editors would like to fill some gaps in the timeline, then this is a useful website. They can also search in google, but it wont give such specific results. According to a small sample from that website's daily media roundup I can safely say it's not selective against the government. Check for example this page, you'll see that they still mentioned BBC News which had it's headline as "Police under attack in Bahrain". Bahraini Activist Talk 05:39, 28 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Significant missing events

[edit]

There are some major events that don't seem to have very comprehensive coverage on this page. Here are some things that come to mind:

  • "Freedom torch" rallies held by February 14 Youth Coalition
  • #OccupyBudayaStreet
  • Major February 14 Youth Coalition events: Dignity Belt, Arrows of Dignity, Decisive Moment

I'm planning to work on some stuff about Freedom Torch rallies and #OccupyBudayaStreet. Billmarczak (talk) 08:49, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Good. February 2012 is missing too. I will try to get some images/videos such as this one (I've e-mailed the owner). Also, I usually keep an archive of any event in my favorites bar, so:

You will probably find better source when searching. For events starting from late December 2011, the useful website I provided earlier is very helpful. Mohamed CJ (talk) 09:35, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! That looks helpful. Billmarczak (talk) 11:07, 11 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This video about crackdown on "Occupy Budaiaya street" protest is now licensed under "Creative Commons". There are other videos in the channel under the same license, some of them useful. Mohamed CJ (talk) 17:21, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also, this documentary channel has many interesting videos, but none of them seem to be recent. This one also has some good videos. About pictures, I have completed the first step of registering into http://www.wattaninet.com forum, where many photographers put high quality images, put with water marks. I will ask them to either upload images to the commons or to Flickr so that we can use them. Mohamed CJ (talk) 17:37, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This video for march of 9 March is now licensed under Creative Commons. It has 200k+ views. Most of those contacted responded well and in a good timely manner; I recommend contacting anyone who uploads good videos and tell him/her that they need to change the license so that it can be used in Wikipedia and else where.
Anyway, what do you use to download videos and convert them? I noticed you uploaded a higher quality video of one of my uploads. Mohamed CJ (talk) 19:16, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much for your work on these videos! I'll have to try directly contacting people. By the way, the 9 March video seems to be originally from Al Wefaq's channel here, and they haven't licensed it under Creative Commons. Also, I'm always concerned about using YouTube videos where the uploader puts in music, because the music may be copyrighted.
On Windows I use this youtube video downloader. It's basically a friendly windows GUI around the excellent youtube-dl python script. On Windows, to convert the files to ogg, I use Miro Video Converter, which is very easy to use, and works well most of the time. Other times, however, it overestimates the bitrate when encoding and produces videos that are way too large. If you want more control, and like using the command line, then ffmpeg2theora is pretty good on Windows.Billmarczak (talk) 04:54, 16 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have contacted Al Wefaq again (last time they didn't respond) and if they don't respond this time as well, I'll arrange a meeting with their media team to convince them. Cheers :) Mohamed CJ (talk) 06:54, 16 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This channel is for Ma'ameer village. It has some 400s videos all released under CC BY-SA 3.0 (They actually wrote that in the description of every video, because they didn't know how to change the license). Mohamed CJ (talk) 14:54, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is another Creative Commons channel. Mohamed CJ (talk) 16:34, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:Protesters fests toward Pearl roundabout.jpg Nominated for Deletion

[edit]
An image used in this article, File:Protesters fests toward Pearl roundabout.jpg, has been nominated for deletion at Wikimedia Commons in the following category: Deletion requests March 2012
What should I do?

Don't panic; a discussion will now take place over on Commons about whether to remove the file. This gives you an opportunity to contest the deletion, although please review Commons guidelines before doing so.

  • If the image is non-free then you may need to upload it to Wikipedia (Commons does not allow fair use)
  • If the image isn't freely licensed and there is no fair use rationale then it cannot be uploaded or used.

To take part in any discussion, or to review a more detailed deletion rationale please visit the relevant image page (File:Protesters fests toward Pearl roundabout.jpg)

This is Bot placed notification, another user has nominated/tagged the image --CommonsNotificationBot (talk) 20:17, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Splitting the article

[edit]

Currently the article is too long. I suggest splitting it into 4 parts.

  1. February 2011 to 14 March (before emergency law).
  2. 15 March to 31 May (emergency law).
  3. 1 June to 31 December.
  4. 1 January 2012-ongoing.

Please note that I'll be updating the article and filling the gaps down to above which will increase (if not double, triple) the article size. Any opinions? Mohamed CJ (talk) 00:40, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
