Actual location of Aeron

[edit]

Some historians, with little basis, have attempted to locate Aeron in Ayrshire (as this article suggests), because of the slight, very slight, similarity of names. I argue that there is a much better probability, one adjoining the region where those so far identified were located. Strathearn, the area between Manaw and Earra a Ghaidheal (Argyll), derives from Strath Eireann, or valley of the Irish, Eireann having the same pronounciation as Aeron. Strath Eireann in Welsh (or Brythonic) would be Ystrad Aeron, and indeed there is just such a place in southwest Wales, in Ceredigion, that was once part of the kingdom of the Irish Deisi before Cunedda conquered the area and gave it to one of his sons. Thus, I argue that Aeron of the ballads, elegies, poems, stories of the Old North, the Aeron of this article, is Strathearn. Chuck Hamilton (talk) 19:45, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That's an interesting theory, but obviously if it doesn't appear in reliable sources it can't be mentioned here.--Cúchullain t/c 16:57, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If Urien of Rheged (presumably in Cumbria) was a 'protector' of Aeron, then a look at a map supports a location in northern England rather than Ayrshire. How does Urien project his power into Ayrshire? He travels across/around the muddy flats of the Solway Firth, then makes the lengthy journey through the only entry to Ayrshire from there (the pass through the mountains, through Sanquhar) and finally downhill into Ayrshire. It doesn't make sense that Ayrshire would not be within the sphere of Alt Clud, if it were within any sphere at all, and it doesn't make sense that Urien would have protection responsibilities so far from home, where he could not respond promptly to any threat. Even if Rheged were placed along the southern coast of Scotland it is difficult to see how Rheged could be more influential than Alt Clud, given the geography. If Aeron was in northern England, very close to Rheged, then this problem of logistics goes away. Regards, Notuncurious (talk) 17:43, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

For the interested, my recent additions to the article have come about after the discussion at Talk:Hen Ogledd#Aeron. This discussion includes my poor translation of the relevant passage from Bromwich et al's Welsh book.--Cúchullain t/c 21:52, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I've added the sources, though now the sources need to be put in a consistent format. There's never a shortage of work to be done at Wikipedia.--Cúchullain t/c 16:05, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
