I don't care if talk pages aren't the place for opinion; reading in this article about how the Coalition have set up this local government system, with all these stupid neighborhood councils and block meetings, like they think the Iraqis care about all their stupid community organizations, as if this was Middle America or something, instead of Baghdad, where people don't need block charters and neighborhood wathces and community councils...this is stuff for soccer moms and old ladies, not people living in Iraq! This just makes me vomit, reading about how a noble indepedant people are having American values and traditions shoved down their throats... VolatileChemical 04:49, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Neighborhood councils aren't like that at all. They do a lot of the ground level administrative tasks - such as approving the return of internally displaced people or approving food and fuel rations. This isn't sexy stuff, but it's the type of thing required regardless of who's in charge. These are also the guys - in theory at least - who feed the people's needs up the government chain. They'll also very occasionally oversee local services like electricity generators. Plus, they're the only elected officials below the provincial level. District council members are chosen from among the neighborhood council members. Unfortunately, a lot of the names and titles in Iraq are translated into American words that don't really reflect the duties all that well. Cow cookie (talk) 01:31, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Baghdad City

[edit]
I'm a bit confused, the Baghdad Governate page, here, says that the governate is both a province and a city. This page seems to say that there is an actual Baghdad City apart from the governate. What is the square mileage/kilometers of the City of Baghdad? --Criticalthinker (talk) 09:40, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's correct. Areas as far away as Taji and Mahmoudiya are in the governorate but not in the city. Similar to large cities like Chicago or New York City, Baghdad is treated differently from a run-of-the mill Iraqi city. According to Wikipedia, the city is 283 square miles while the governorate is 1,571.8 square miles. Cow cookie (talk) 01:20, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Baghdad area with an area of 660 km 2 and Baghdad governorate with its outskirts (Baghdad belt areas (Mahmudiyah, Taji, and others)) an area of 4555 km 2 and the city of Baghdad area of 204.2 km 2 I from Baghdad and I know everything in Baghdad
