[edit]I'm thinking about changing "American prominent proponent of pacifism, ..." to "prominent American proponent of pacifism, ...". (I may have done it by the time you see this. I guess I should explain why, and I'm not sure I can, entirely.
- First, in my experience it is more common usage
- Second, it avoids alliteration, which seems to have no value here, or maybe even a negative value--distracting from the words
- Third, (and this should probably be first), the order of the adjectives would seem to have an effect on the meaning of the words--the question I'm asking myself, is he a prominent proponent of pacifism, ... who happens to be American, or is he an American proponent of pacifism, ... who happens to be prominent--and is that prominence worldwide or limited to prominence in America? I guess based on the words of Tolstoy, it sounds like he (Ballou) is prominent neither in America nor worldwide, nor does it sound like he's prominent in any aspect except as a proponent of pacifism.
Hmm, so much as I don't care for it personally, I think I talked myself into leaving it as is, at most he is a prominent proponent of pacifism, ... who also is American. Rhkramer (talk) 11:15, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
I would rather say: "prominent proponent of abolitionism, non-resistance, and socialism, and the founder of the Hopedale Community in Massachusetts." "Abolitionnism" is obviously in the USA; the works of Ballou has an importance that is beyond the USA, with their influence on Tolstoy, and though the latter, their transmission to Mohandas Gandhi. (sorry if my English is not "publishable"). - AndWater — Preceding unsigned comment added by AndWater (talk • contribs) 00:10, 14 May 2015 (UTC)

Pronunciation?
[edit]How do you pronounce his given name "Adin"? Was he of French descent? Muzilon (talk) 02:41, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
