Queen of England or Queen of the United Kingdom?
[edit]Queen of England or Queen of the United Kingdom?
It seems to me that the following sentence (copied from http://usarc.usgs.gov/antarctic_atlas/index.html) seems to be incorrect:
", and named by him for Queen Adelaide of England."
I searched for a Queen Adelaide and found only two Queen Adelaide: Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen and Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge. Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge was born in 1833, one year after the discovery of Adelaide Island. Therefore, I concluded that "Queen Adelaide of England" must be Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen who lived from 1792 until 1849. Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen was the Queen consort of William IV of the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom is not England and the official title of William IV of the United Kingdom was even "William the Fourth, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland King, Defender of the Faith". I think that the sentence should be:
", and named by him for Queen Adelaide of the United Kingdom."
However, did not correct it yet. -- Citylover 08:59, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
Real History of Adelaide Island
[edit]The name Adelaide stems from the French surveyor who originally called the Island, Adelie Land, after all the penguins which resided on it.
This became corrupted to Adelaide Island after the British arrived.
Island has 2 bases on it. Carvajal - This is the old Adelaide Island base operated by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS). When BAS set up Rothera Station (on the other side of the Island, see next), the base was handed over to the Chileans and renamed. The base has been used for summer occupation only since BAS handed it over. The Skiway for plane access has been problematic and the Chilean Air Force (FACH) will no longer use it. BAS Wintering Staff visit the station from Rothera during Winter on sledging trips. Rothera Research Station - This is the British Antarctic Survey Station that took over from Adelaide Station.
