Place of Birth
[edit]I've semi-protected the page for a week, due to the on-going edit war over the place of birth. I've also warned all the IPs/users involved.
Both sources 1 2 cited list Palestine as her place of birth, with no mention of Shibli–Umm al-Ghanam. So in my mind it should be reverted back to the previous state. But I'll refrain from doing that, given I've just used my admin tools, and Israel-Palestine is a Contentious topic --Chris 10:00, 9 June 2023 (UTC)
Investigation of the place of birth of Adania Shibli
[edit]Obviously, there are people interested to obscur her place of birth and to remove it everywhere and to replace it with "Palestine", without any more specific information. The most reliable source seems to be this article from 2014, because it is from a time before all controversy: https://nena-news.it/cultura-sensi-di-adania-shibli/ There, it is said (in Italian), that she was born in a village in Upper Galilee which is "within the current borders of Israel". ("Adania Shibli nata nel 1974 nell Alta Galilea in un villaggio all interno del confine israeliano attualmente vive tra Londra e Ramallah.")
The actual place of birth can be found e.g. on these pages:
- https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adania_Shibli
- https://gl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adania_Shibli
It is an Arab town in Northern Israel (Upper Galilee) called Shibli–Umm al-Ghanam.
Adania Shibli calls herself Palestine, but this does not change the fact that she is an Israeli citizen, born and raised in Israel, went to school and university in Israel (M.A. Hebrew Univ. Jerusalem 2001, title: Discourse, power, and media coverage of the killing of Palestinian children by the Israeli Army). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thorwald C. The changes include infringement on aspects of the author's privacy (exact birth place), and might endanger her politically, and appropriation of moral rights as they are reverted to a colonial body, responsible for the displacement and erasure of indigenous culture and literature of Palestine. The enforcement of a colonial definition on the colonised is therefore distressing and professionally harmful. Exclusion of the birth place will minimize the harm. Please change "Shibli Umalghanam, Israel", to "Palestine", or an empty space. 2001:9E8:17EE:5400:804A:417B:D3F8:7A40 (talk) 11:18, 9 June 2023 (UTC)

- This is anti-Semitic propaganda of the worst kind. Really bad that Jew haters can influence a decision here. Adania Shibli was born as Adaniyya Šiblī in 1974 in Upper Galilee in Israel. That is a fact. She is an Israeli citizen, not a Palestinian. That is also a fact. There has never been a state called Palestine. That is a fact too. 78% of the Mandate territory of Palestine is called Jordan today. Learn the facts, refrain from false propaganda. Israel is not a land of colonizers, but the land of the indigine population of Palestine. Arabs came to this area only in 538 AD. They are the colonizers. Shame on Wikipedia. 95.90.210.129 (talk) 01:29, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
- Even though there are reliable sources stating that she is an Israeli citizen born in 1974 in the state of Israel, her German publisher calls her place of birth "Palestine".[1] - This seems to indicate her personal view, but I don't have any experience how we as WP editors should handle this issue. The German WP calls her an Israeli citizen of Palestinian origin.- Maybe there are other articles about Israeli Palestinians that pose a similar problem? Munfarid1 (talk) 06:11, 16 October 2023 (UTC)
- German Wikipedia generally solves the problem by pointing to both: The Israeli citizenship and the Arab-Palestinian background. Of course, a word can be added how the person understands itself. Two other examples from German Wikipedia are Ahmad Mansour and Salim Alafenisch. And this is what an encyclopedia should do: Name the facts, and refrain from own interpretation (and especially refraining from obscuring facts). --Thorwald C. "On the other hand, according to journalist Ulrich Noller, the novel serves “anti-Israel and antisemitic narratives, and it not only allows such readings, but opens up space for them.” 161.29.22.84 (talk) 10:30, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
