Silver Gilt Ewer

[edit]

This article would greatly benefit with a photograph of van Vianen's famous silver-gilt ewer of 1614. This ewer is generally regarded by many scholars as work of great artestry and one of the most imortant pieces of silverwork ever produced. The 1614 ewer is a tour-de-force of Repousse work and it needs a mention in the article. "Repousse" needs used in the text too. The ewer is not just important of its own time as it would tax a modern silversmith and is as avant garde and modernist a work as anything made today. Christies sold the ewer in Amsterdam at auction in 1976 and produced as lavish catalogue devoted just to this ewer. The Christies catalogue would be a good source to quote. Images of the van Vianen ewer are readily available on the net. I'm not qualified to update the article myself but perhaps my suggestion could be elaborated upon by someone who is. In good faith.
