What type of plague?

From the entry: "Her father Chryses, a priest of Apollo, begged Agamemnon to return her to him. Agamemnon refused and Apollo sent a plague amongst the Greeks."

There are several types of plague -- does anyone know what type Apollo sent?

Also, should this read "Agamemnon refused so Apollo sent a plague among the Greeks in retribution"?
