Politics
[edit]How about talking about the numerous scandels that have rocked this town(i.e. the police being disbanded, and why). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Vesago1978 (talk • contribs) 02:38, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
- I could find no article, on line or in print, that gave any reason for the disbandment of the police department other than it being economically difficult to justify the maintanence of an independant police department for a community as small as Abita Springs. (Hence, they turned to the sheriff's department for police services.) No "scandal" was implied by any article on the subject I could find. Wikipedia is not the place to repeat, much less *start* unfounded rumors. Fish Man (talk) 17:32, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
Recent editions to the Local Economy section
[edit]An anonymous editor recently added blurbs about two local business, "Absolute IT" and "Abita Springs Lumber Company". In both cases, the description consisted of advertising copy. The description of Absolute IT began: "We offer an array of Converged technologies which has been nearly impossible to implement in the past. Graduating to new and exciting levels of integrating the web, database, and phone technologies together." The description of "Abita Springs Lumber" was similar in tone, beginning, "We are the premier one stop shop..."
There are several things wrong with this: 1) Flagrant advertising like this is strictly forbidden on Wikipedia. 2) This tone is clearly not "encyclopedic". 3) The text may be copyrighted advertising copy of the businesses mentioned. 4) Noteworthiness of an IT consulting business and a Lumber retailer is highly questionable.
Some of the other businesses in the economy section meet the necessary noteworthiness criteria. For example, Abita Brewing is noteworthy enough to have a long established Wikipedia article of its own, and the UCM Museum as well as the non-profit organization "Abita Springs Opry" are unique and unusual enough to merit a Neutral Point of View mention. No offense to the businesses in question is intended but, an IT consulting business and a lumber retailer are hardly unique and unusual businesses. Fish Man (talk) 18:34, 22 September 2008 (UTC)
- It happened again, (comercial advertisement insertion for "Absolute IT" into the article) this time by a registered user who registered moments before performing the edit. After undoing the edit (thus removing the advertisement), I sent the more friendly "Welcome / No Spam" template to the new user's talk page. Fish Man (talk) 17:27, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
