This summation of Jack Vance's story "Abercrombie Station" is entirely my own work, and not a copy of someone else's as the SearchBot has erroneously suggested. it deserves to have a place on Wikipedia for those curious about Jack Vance who's work is having a renaissance these days due to his great influence on other current science fiction and fantasy authors.
