Working on it
[edit]I had to jump in and "fix" the intro. para. -- couldn't stand it. I tried to make it read a little more "authoritatively" and less like a junior-high essay (sorry). Also I tried to make it more directly and thoroughly address/introduce the actual topic itself. I did not add the necessary citations back in this go-around (I'm just really bad at using the citation template, sorry!) But, I plan to do that next.
In reading what's there now, it seemed to me that there are both many causes of the condition and much general lay-person interst in the topic. The rewrite should both address lay-person needs and cover the topic broadly enough to at least suggest (better yet, link to) additional reading. In particular, rather than get into each and every cause/source of bloating, (there are other websites more appropriate for symptom checking!) this article should probably at most just touch on them (but link to the specifics, which should already have their own articles).
That said, I'll try to make these proposed edits sometime in the near future (days-weeks). (As a sufferer myself, I'm rather "into" the topic at present - lol!) However, if someone else reads this and feels keen to give it a go -- be my guest! Enjoy! I just hope these proposed ideas help. And, of course, feel free to message me directly if you want to collaborate on it. That'd be fun! Yours in health (hopefully!) Cynthisa (talk) 18:56, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
Stomach cramps?
[edit]Where's the discussion of stomach cramps, folks? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.250.184.191 (talk) 23:57, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
Distension
I recently was diagnosed with OGILVIES SYNDROME characterized by extreme and painful distension. It took the doctors almost two weeks to come up with this. It's a total failure of the smooth muscles that purform peristalsis - Peristalsis is a radially symmetrical contraction and relaxation of muscles which propagates in a wave down the muscular tube. This is what "drives" the fecal material out of your body. I think it is pertinent to know about this (Google Ogilvies) if it happens to you...but I'm told that it is rare. There is one med that works to stimulate this movement, however it has a certain risk and must be done in the ICU. - The above comment is quite old, but it does offer some good advice: It would be good if the article briefly touched on things like Ogilvies Syndrome, for general info./breadth purposes, and provided the link to the specific malady's own article (assuming there is one). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cynthisa (talk • contribs) 19:14, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
..and what's Distention?
[edit]This article doesn't explain its topic. Rfwoolf (talk) 21:49, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
- ..and I know, Wikipedia isn't a Dictionary - that's not the point. This is an encyclopedia, tell me about Abdominal Distention, starting with a description of what it is. Rfwoolf (talk) :)
- Haha actually I usually find that sort of entry in a dictionary and it is maddening. Blood loss, a loss of blood. GEE THANKS! Someone please fix! M00npirate (talk) 22:22, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
- It bugged me too, so I tried to fix it. Hope you find this version an improvement! Cynthisa (talk) 19:07, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Voluntary
[edit]I have come across several instances of people attempting or thinking about attempting to induce distension for erotic reasons. This strikes me as dangerous and foolhardy and I wondered if there was some information about this practice to edify readers as to potential health problems. Thanks. Proposed merge
[edit]A merge has been proposed between bloating and this page. Opinions? LT90001 (talk) 11:58, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
The article needs to be changed to reflect that bloating and distention can be the same, but distention can be resulting from other sources such as fluid accumulation. 199.190.170.30 (talk) 05:55, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
