Little Chandler - Real name- Thomas Chandler, the reason it is his nickname is because he appears to be a little man. Small baby teeth, white knuckles on a small hand - Puts importance on material things, believes that Gallaher has been successful because he has a lot of material goods - Gives the reader a very clear thought that his life would be better if he was just like Gallaher. This leads him to be envious of him, big theme in this story, leads into many situations in the story. - He has a passion for poetry. On his way to visit Gallaher, he wants to create a poem. His love for poetry doesn’t defeat his shyness. Although he loves it, he does not share it with his wife. - Observer, rather than a participant. He looks at peoples lives rather than living himself. He believes that he can still do a lot of things because he is still “young” although the reader knows that this won’t happen. We can see that Chandler is inferior to Gallaher. Observer, he doesn’t want to show his wife he loves poetry

Gallaher

- He is an old friend of Chandler. He comes to Dublin to visit him, but in the end shows his superiority to his old friend. - Works in London press. - He is a ladies man. Tells Chandler he can have any woman he wants, and if he wanted to be married, he would be married easily - Loves to travel, this is a large difference between Gallaher and chandler. Chandler wants to travel, Gallaher always does, shows his superiority to Chandler again. He is a participant, not an observer - Born in Ireland - He left Dublin. This is the main reason that Chandler is envious. Gallaher escaped, he is able to have a successful life.

Themes-

- Envy- Demonstrated many times from Chandler to Gallaher. - Communication/Emotional problems- With Chandler between his wife and child. Some troubles with Chandler and Gallaher. - Paralysis- Chandler is stuck in a life he does not want. He is stuck where he does not want to be, in his marriage, not traveling, stuck in Dublin. - False hope- He is given false hope many times. Thinks he will leave Dublin, but he doesn’t. Thinks he is able to become a poet, not able to.
