[edit]Move this article to ATM (disambiguation) and then make ATM re-direct to Automatic Teller Machine?? Any objections please explain. Georgia guy 00:02, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Most common use should be seen first and the one you suggest is the most common in english speaking countries. I think english Wikipedia is an international encyclopedia written in english. Not an encyclopedia of Great Britain and/or United States. Thus I see the disambiguation page as the best alternative to bee the first page. --Easyas12c 16:38, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I'd support Automatic Teller Machine being on this page, and a disamb page being created elsewhere. I don't know about other non-native English speakers but for me ATM had no other meaning than the cash machine until I found this page. – Alensha 寫 词 13:48, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
- I'm just glad it doesn't go straight to "ass to mouth" anymore... therealhazel 134.173.94.193
Removals of line items for cause
[edit]I've removed a couple of items, as noted here:
- Azhagiya Tamil Magan, forthcoming Tamil film starring Vijay and Shreya
- The article reference is OK, but 'ATM' isn't mentioned in the article at all.
- Anti-tank guided missile
- The acronyms appearing in the target article are 'ATGM' and 'ATGW'; 'ATM' is not mentioned.
--User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 00:20, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
- I today re-removed that entry, and an anonymous user even decided to place it atop the list. Someone must be desperate to promote the film, unless they think people interested in Automated Teller Machines or Asynchronous Transfer Mode are their target audience. -- Jimbonator (talk) 01:40, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Removed items
- African Traditional Medicine (According to Google results)
- Applied Traditional Medicine (Some universities use "ATM" abbreviation for it)
- Applied Thai Traditional Medicine or Applied Traditional Thai Medicine (Some universities use "ATM" abbreviation for it, instead of ATTM)
- 'ATM' are not mentioned too.

Tact
[edit]I came here looking for "Asynchronous Transfer Mode" and I get to read down a list that includes "a-- to mouth". Is there any way we can be a little more tactful for those of us who want to do something useful on the Internet? What if my kids were looking for "ATM" meaning "Asynchronous Transfer Mode" or "Automatic Teller Machine" for a class at school? I understand and support free speech and free information, but I also support decency and adult responsibility. I would be fine with leaving the link on this page as long as the text description is a lot less offensive - unfortunately I can't think of a less offensive description or title that wouldn't make it a useless link. Am I out of line here or what? Does anyone else have an idea of what to do here? --Rcronk 22:46, 20 February 2007 (UTC) I agree, and removed it... sorry if that was bad of me... I just got sick when I saw it and use wikipedia alot and didn't want to experience that.... if one searches for the whole word, isn't that enough to get to the right page, why have the achronym as well... //Me
Bloody american puritans. Information is free no matter what you think your kids might do on the internet. Why do you deserve the right to censor contents on wikipedia ?
I personally find George Bush offensive, but I dont go about censoring articles about him because I respect that other people might find it interesting(or funny).
As long as people stay to the facts there are NO limits on what should be or not should be on wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.217.114.90 (talk) 19:15, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
===A Workaround...=== not to be confused with [reach around]
Gentlemen, I too first visited this page for one of the technical terms, and didn't even realize there was a sexual context. However, I would say that there is REAL educational value for listing sexual terms on Wikipedia, and making sure they are find-able, so that when you hear something on the web, or in a movie, or something the guys are talking about at the gym, or perhaps something your partner mentions they'd like to try, you actually do need to know. Suppose your bed mate asks "hey, have you ever tried ATM?", wouldn't you like to quickly check that on your iPhone or Blackberry while they're in the bathroom - before they get back - and without a general Google search, which will bring back loads of ads and porn. My phone has a special Wikipedia app, which I use quite a bit and prefer over a general Google or Yahoo search. I've looked to Wikipedia for terms I've heard in movies - apparently I don't get out that much - I can even remember what the last few terms were - though I won't go into them here.
Could we have something like "ATM (adult context)" that is a link? I think that would satisfy most parties. Since I don't want to start a delete war I'm not going to add it, but I think whoever removed it should consider this workaround. Ttennebkram (talk) 16:19, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Sorting the List?
[edit]Is the list in any particular order? I'd vote for some logical grouping, and then alphabetical by fully expanded phrase within that, or just alphabetical in general. What's the "Best Practice" ? Ttennebkram (talk) 16:23, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
I just made some sorting on the list, a basic clasifications... hope it helps.. anyone can always improve it! I did also end up here looking for Asynchronous Transfer Mode, wich is a very known tech term.. not only the cash machines! So I'm glad there is a disambiguation page. But it needed some order too. --Dhcpy (talk) 18:13, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
at the moment
[edit]atm is is used by gamers and cell phone users to mean "at the moment"
For instance you might say something like "sorry busy atm"
this use of atm should be listed
Sorry that I am not following formatting conventions

- Thank you for your suggestion. However, we already have an entry for "atm" in Wiktionary, and if you look at the top-right of the page we are discussing you will see a link to that entry, where the use of "atm" for "at the moment" is given. Wiktionary is the right place for dictionary definitions, not this "disambiguation" page, which is only for distinguishing between articles in Wikipedia itself that have similar titles: Noyster (talk), 10:54, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
Requested move 4 November 2024
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: moved. Clear consensus for the DAB page to move and ATM to point to Automatic teller machine. Some editors have proposed that Automatic teller machine actually be moved to ATM, but as that was out of scope of the initial RM, for now, moving the DAB page and pointing ATM to the machine as a primary redirect. No prejudice against an immediate follow up RM that discusses the move of Automated teller machine to ATM if editors so decide. ATM → ATM (disambiguation) – ATM should redirect to Automatic teller machine (ATM) per WP:PRIMARYREDIRECT. Pageview data from this ATM disambiguation page shows the machine article get more traffic than the other topics combined. When users search for "ATM," the vast majority are seeking information about banking machines rather than the many other, less common meanings that would remain easily accessible via a hatnote on the Automated teller machine article:
Other notable abbreviations with a widely recognized primary topic, like NASA or URL, already employ similar redirects. 𝚈𝚘𝚟𝚝 (𝚝𝚊𝚕𝚔𝚟𝚝) 02:50, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- Per WP:DPT, let's have a look at the stats. WikiNav for ATM says that in September, the proposed primary topic was the most common topic, but it was far from clear that
the vast majority of users
are seeking it, as we could only identify 656 clickstreams compared to 2.7k incoming views. That is only ~24%, which is not really high compared to other examples we see elsewhere (I've collated some of them in my persistent thread at WT:D). And there's only 149 more filtered clickstreams that we're not seeing there. - If this is truly the primary topic, what could be the reason that people aren't choosing it here? It's the second link in the common meaning section at the top, so it's quite prominent.
- Note also that long-term significance should be discussed. Until these two things are addressed, I don't think we should move. (Oppose) --Joy (talk) 08:47, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- Support Per nom. In fact, I'd also support Automated teller machine being moved to ATM per WP:COMMONNAME (similar to examples given such as NASA where the abbreviation is more commonly used). ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 05:18, 5 November 2024 (UTC)

- Support. Clear primary redirect. -- Necrothesp (talk) 15:43, 7 November 2024 (UTC)

- Move Automated teller machine to ATM. WP:Primarytopic. Theparties (talk) 00:39, 11 November 2024 (UTC)
