Home row

[edit]

We keep getting home row, qwerty keyboards, etc. forced on us in this DAB. Wrong.

WP is not a search engine. "Disambiguation pages are solely intended to allow the user to choose from a list of ... articles" MOS:DAB. We can't be listing every known subject that may be incidentally associated with another one. "Disambiguations are paths leading to different articles which could, in principle, have the same title." MOS:DAB I checked both Home row and Password strength - neither are ever referred to by the term "ASDF" - never. So, please make a case in those two articles that they are known by the term "asdf" and then add them to the DAB.

I'm not sure what you mean by "forced on us in this DAB". Has it been removed and then replaced, previously?
The entry was part of this page in May 2006 (the month the page was started), May 2008, May 2010, and everything in between.
The MOS:DAB guidelines are guidelines. I (and also, it would seem, every editor in this page's history) consider this situation to be a edge-case scenario that requires outside-the-box judgement.
Specifically:
ASDF (sequence of letters) redirects to that page (touch typing) and is referring to the "home row". Relatedly, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Aoeu.
Weak password redirects to a section that now (and previously) mentions asdfgh. I was basing it on the various lists of "common bad passwords" that have circulated recently. See the comments from admin Tizio in this old Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Asdf. (Later on: I'm not so sure about this; it comes at #278 in the list I was thinking of. I'll leave it as a suggested addition, instead)
We could also add that 'asdf' is a common metasyntactic variable (or placeholder name), as described by wikt:asdf. But it is not currently mentioned in those articles, both of which historically have problems with overwhelming lists of examples ({{Example farm}}), so I wouldn't suggest adding that, currently.
I hope that explains the history of this page, and my thinking, clearly. Feel free to ask for clarifications, or further discussion (here or WT:MOSDAB). Regards, -- Quiddity (talk) 18:09, 9 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I added an observation to the entry refering to the QWERTY keyboard. It might not be the apropriate place for such an observation, but I think it's worth mentioning. I often heard programmers saying "Don't use 'asdf', use something meaningfull. I have the perception it became jargon word. If I'm right, it's also worth mentioning. However, I think that the place of thet observation should be on the qwerty keyboard page and the entry should link there. "asdf is what you type in the subject line when you have no subject."
