Amex as reference to the USA
[edit]I know the person who repeatedly inserts a line to this page stating that AMEX is used in the UK to refer to the United States of America. This is not true, obviously. The guy who makes these changes is known to me in real life, and he thinks he's some kind of comic genius. If anybody sees this line added, please remove it. Thanks. jdan (talk) 01:55, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
- Well, it's certaintly something said where I grew up in Buckinghamshire, I live in Bristol now and it's a slang term used often here, including by many people you overhear on the train, etc. (ie: not just myself) too. I've also family in Birmingham who use it occasionally and have heard people there using it too.
- I'm not too sure how you can cite this, unless you have a sound recorder and record it being used by people.

- I've never heard of it used in this way, in the UK or elsewhere. No good source seems to exist, so I've removed it. (If it belongs anywhere, it should be Urban Dictionary.) --RFBailey (talk) 03:28, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
- I don't know who or why this line is being removed. It's probably jdan who can't cope being wrong. However, AMEX is commonly used in the UK to refer to the USA. 81.96.22.104 (talk) 22:22, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
- No problem. Find a reliable source and it will stick. Mind you, I've been here a fair few years and never heard of it. But your reliable source will surely prove me wrong. Karenjc 22:25, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
- I'm not sure how I can get a 'reliable source' of a 'slang' term without resorting to getting a dictaphone and taking it on the streets? Martin H. Heron (talk) 09:15, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
- If reliable sources (newspapers, books etc.) use it, it may belong here. If it's a street slang term it does not belong here, see WP:NOTDICTIONARY and WP:DABNOT. --Muhandes (talk) 13:35, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
