Talk:ABS-CBN/Archive 1
Untitled
[edit]Please add only articles that are relevant to the television network not the mother company. For the mother company, see ABS-CBN Corporation. -hollyckuhno (talk) 15:12, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
- Does anyone have proof (such as annual reports) that the subject of this article and the subject of mother company's article are different persons? Checking the on the GMA Network case, this is not the case. –HTD 16:24, 19 November 2011 (UTC)
- You don't need proof to prove that ABS-CBN (the network) and ABS-CBN Corporation (the company) is a different entity. ABS-CBN (channel 2 manila) is licensed on the National Telecommunications Commission as a commercial terrestrial television network, while ABS-CBN Corporation is a publicly listed company on the Philippine Stock Exchange. Tawag ng Tanghalan
[edit]I like watching Tawag ng Tanghalan and as a matter of fact, it is the only show that I don't missed watching. I got mad, really mad, when Demie Fresco was eliminated. I think she 's the best singer among the contestants that ever participated in your singing contest and it is an injustice to Demie and all the viewers if she's not included in the semi-finals or finals. She's far, far better by a mile against your 3 semi-finalist.She 's the only singer that conveys emotion and who sang perfectly in tune. Requested move 29 January 2017
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: no consensus. No discussion here in the last three weeks and I think it's clear that a consensus did not evolve. I'd suggest revisiting this in a few months and perhaps advertising it more widely by leaving a couple of notices at the wikiprojects involved. Jenks24 (talk) 14:50, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
– The television network is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for "ABS-CBN." RioHondo (talk) 22:59, 29 January 2017 (UTC) --Relisting. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:54, 9 February 2017 (UTC)
- The primary topic for the term ABS-CBN is obviously the article for the company as it covers all the important aspects/parts/information of the history of the term including but not limited to the television network (while the TV network is the most valuable asset of the company, it still only accounts for 50-55 percent of the total revenue of the company and at the same time it is not the ultimate origin of the entity since before ABS and CBN was merged there was an even older entity in the name of Bolinao Electronics Corporation. Hollyckuhno (talk) 14:30, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
- Comment People could care less about the content of the article. You can always switch it around and improve one or the other. It's just that the TV network is top of mind and the topic most likely to be searched for the term "ABS-CBN" per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, specially when we know that the N in CBN is Network. The company behind the network, or whatever other assets it owns, is just secondary. TV is primary, and what gains the most mentions and references for the term.--RioHondo (talk) 15:10, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
- You need some actual evidence for your claims of PRIMARY, not just what seem like personal assertions of what is "top of mind", "most likely to be searched", etc. DMacks (talk) 15:42, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
- One only has to access their website abs-cbn.com to see that it directs to all television content, not the corporate site. Not sure this is reliable but page view stats from last year before the unilateral moves of Nov. 24th. here. No different from CBS vs CBS Corporation, ESPN vs ESPN Inc., GMA Network vs GMA Network (company), BET vs BET Networks, Al Jazeera vs Al Jazeera Media Network, etc etc.--RioHondo (talk) 17:16, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
- But the guidelines also says that the "what first comes to mind" criterion is usually rejected. There is a difference between primary usage and primary long-term significance. In this case, the article with the long term significance is the article about the company as it covers all the most important aspects of the subject from the past, the present, and the future. Hollyckuhno (talk) 23:33, 30 January 2017 (UTC)
- These are two related articles so the what first comes to mind argument is valid IMO. The TV network has for the longest time been the undisputed primary topic of ABS-CBN, before the November 24th 2016 move that wasnt even discussed. I would even suggest moving the network's owner back to its natural disambiguation ABS-CBN Corporation for recognizability. Surely, no one would be thinking of the corporation that owns KidZania Manila or the mobile phone network on first mention of ABS-CBN, but the TV network and its shows and stars, and you know this. :)RioHondo (talk) 04:08, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
- Personally I don't have any problem with that. If that is the most suitable action for this case then so be it. But nevertheless I also want to point out that ABS-CBN does not have a "Corporation" in its logo. Additionally, the corporate logo is the one used for the TV network which I think is odd considering that it doesn't look appropriate on the TV screen. In the past, when the corporate name of ABS-CBN Corporation is ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation, the words "Broadcasting" and "Corporation" were also not included in its corporate logo. The TV network is not a separate company but because ABS-CBN has grown enormously, it has become a must to keep the TV network article separate from the company article to prevent confusing the readers and at the same time prevent the article from becoming bloated. Hollyckuhno (talk) 11:56, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
- Hmm. I don't know the structure of this company. But if youre saying the network and the company are the same, then this could be a candidate for merging. Consider patterning it after HBO that discusses both the tv network and the company (Home Box Office, Inc.) with its many channels (apart from its flagship HBO) and other non-TV ventures listed in summary style. Even if you merge the two articles, it's not going to be as bloated as HBO. Anyway, bloated aint bad. :)--RioHondo (talk) 17:46, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
- I recommend to keep it this way to prevent confusing the readers. While the TV network may not be a legally separate company, it is obviously a separate entity from its mother company (like a brand, but a too important subject to be merged to the other article). What we have to decide is what article gets the term ABS-CBN and what article should we disambiguate. Hollyckuhno (talk) 02:13, 1 February 2017 (UTC)
- Ok, in that case, the tv network gets the unqualified title, it's not just the primary topic, it's also being consistent with these Philippine related articles: GMA Network and GMA Network (company); TV5 (Philippines) and TV5 Network (company).--RioHondo (talk) 06:54, 1 February 2017 (UTC)
